So the latest exchange ii 350

last time I saw Paris, which was
in 1939, I received only thirty
francs for a dollar. Still, that
wasn't bad. It is, of course, the
buying power that counts. In
1939 in Paris you could buy a
good Havana cigar for 6 francs.
You could get a haircut for the
same price you could have
coffee and cognac at Fouquet's
sidewalk cafe on the Champs
Eleysee for 10 francs. And you
could make a 10-franc bet at
the racetrack.

gressman Harris Ellsworth an
nounced today that competitive
examinations for appointments
to vacancies at both the U. S.
Naval and U. S. Military acad
emies will be conducted by the
U. S. Civil Service commission,
Monday. July 17, at the post of
fice buildings in Albany, Coos
Bay, Eugene, Grants Pass, Med
ford, Roseburg, and Reedsport.
Candidates for the academies
must never have been married,
and must be bonafide residents
of the fourth congressional dis
trict. As of the date of entrance
into the academies. July 1, 1951,
appointees must be 17 years of
age. ne maximum entrance
ages for West Point and An
apolis are 22, and 21 respective
ly. Candidates now in the armed
services are eugiDie to compete.
Examination Confined
The examination will be con
fined to vocabulary and reading,
spatial relations, and algebra.
Nominations to the academies
will be on the basis of grades
earned in the competitive examination.

A bolt of lightning struck Olin
Spiva's silo Saturday night,
flashed through his barn and
knocked down Spiva, a row of
20 cows he was milking and
one of his horses. Then it snaked
up to the roof and tore loose a
'ew boards.
Spiva, the cows and the horse
were shaken up a bit, but oth
erwise were reported unhurt.

Pleas Not
In 1947, when Robert Taylor
visited London, he was sur
rounded by a wild mob of thou

Grounds for Divorce.
The leader in grounds for di
vorce throughout the world is
cruelty. That is revealed by ex
tensive research conducted by
the French Institute of Demo
graphic studies. Keep that in
mind, lady. Do not be cruel to
your husband.
As there are thirteen hundred
and forty-two ways a woman can
be cruel to her spouse, space does
not permit their listing here,
but one of them is nagging. After
cruelty the next three leading
grounds for divorce, according to
the aforementioned research, are
in the order named, infidelity,
egoism and averice.
The United States leads the
major nations of the world in di
vorce. Eighty-six out of every
ten thousand marriages in this
country end in the divorce
courts. The British have the
best record. They usually mar
ry for keeps. Only seven out of
ten thousand British marriages
end in divorce.
Rabbits.

out ways and means of enabling
people to live a healthy old age.
One specialist in geniatrics says
doing housework conscientiously
and thoroughly makes a woman
live longer. Call that to the at
tention of your wife. Mister,
the next time she refers to her
housework as an arduous task.
Tell her she is lucky not to have
a maid to do the work as that
would shorten her life.
