What city in the U. 6. A pays
lt fire fighters the most money?
If you don't know I don't think
you would ever guess. The an
swer is Dearborn, Mich., where
the annual wage of a fireman is
$4,360. New York city firemen
are paid $4,150 a year. Consider
ing the experiences Chicago has
had with fire you would think
its firemen would be paid excel
lent salaries. Such is far from the
case. In a recently issued list of
the salaries paid firemen in over
100 United States municipalities,
Chicago was 80th on the list.
Imagine that; the second city in
the country being 80th on the
list in salaries paid firemen. The
Chicago firemen are paid $3,480
a year. They have to be on duty
67 hours a week.
Divorcee
Have recently noted report of
an unusual number of couples
who have been divorced after 50
or more years of marriage. The
provocation must be great for
people to want to separate after
living together for half a century
or more. It certainly was in the
case of that 72-year-old woman
of Delaware, Ohio, who, in ask
ing for a divorce, charged that
her husband hit her on the head
with a rolling pin while they
were celebrating their golden
wedding anniversary.

Rogue River Fire
Summons Firemen
From Annual Ball
Rogue River, June 7 The
third annual Firemen's ball giv
en at the high school gym Sat
urday was climaxed by a fire
at the country home of Dr. A. P.
Klomhatis, lour miles from town,
on the West Evans Creek road.
A larue combination shop and
deep freezer room was gutted by
the fire and the building and
contents, including a new freez
er, valuable shop equipment and
other tools were a total loss.
Discovered at Midnight
The fire was discovered after
midnight and while Dr. and Mrs.
Klomhaus battled desperately to
save their new home, about eight
feet from the shoD. their son,
Gilbert, alerted the neighbors
and Gretchen Klomhaus drove to
Rogue River to call the volun
teer fire department. She con
tacted fireman Jerry Cleveland's
wife who went to the city hall
to blow the fire siren while Gret
chen raced to the school house,
where she notified the firemen.
Those nearest the door were on
their way when the siren sound
ed.
The rural pumper truck rush
ed to the fue and was followed
by the forestry truck driven by
Oin Hilger. "When I arrived,"
said Hilger, "the firemen had the
fire under control but not out.
Water from the two trucks was

"We couldn't use our new
portable pump," said Fire Chief
Dave Grlvin. "because we didn't
have enough hose to reach Evans
creek. We were giving the dance
to raise funds to buy hose." At
tendance at the dance was fair,
he reported, "but we would ap
preciate more support of our
summer dances at the slab in the
park.
Support Needed
"Folks may not understand.
but we need their support a little
longer. The boys have been giv
ing the best protection they
could to the rural district for the
past three years. Not only fight
ing the country fires, for free,
but giving dances to raise funds
to buy the rural fire equipment.
And we would like more of the
rural folks to come to our dances
or purchase tickets to help our
efforts. Saturday night we all
ruined our best clothes and after
the fire, the truck broke down.
We've got it fixed temporarily
but we need more funds, so we
are giving the first of the sum
mer dances, next Saturday. "

District Plan Told
A report on formation of the
Rural Fire district, which is not
vet comoleted. was given at the
Business Men's booster dinner
Thursday evening. Five direct
ors are required and in order to
elect them, five petitions, each
bearing 15 signatures, must be
presented. The first petition re
questing the formation of the
district was circulated by Grange
Master Carl Christenson and the
final ones were completed by the
Lioni Auxiliary, reported Gel
vln. "Now we need help with the
directors' petitions and we also
need the support of the rural
district at o u r benefit dances
which will finance our fire fight
ing until the district is completed
and tax money is made avail
able," he said.
Appeal Raised
"Residents of the city of Rogue
River are paying a tax for their
fire protection and they have
been supporting and furnishing
the free protection given the
ranchers. After three years they
feel the burden. And the boys
are getting discouraged, only the
siren will bring them out for
practice now. mis is a direct ap
peal to all of the district: Don't
slacken your support In this dan
gerously dry summer, come to
the park next Saturday whether
you dance or not. It is for the
protection of your home. We ex
tend a cordial invitation to all."

"That's a lotta hooey!"
Davis, who made his ill-fated
movie debut with Bette Davis in
"Winter Meeting," is the gent
who digs ditches and lays bricks
when acting jobs are scarce.
I got the deep-freeze treat
ment after that picture," he
grinned. "It was a turkey and I
was in and out faster than you
could read the reviews."
So Davis, who is six foot
three, bustled himself a job as a
day laborer with a construction
company at 50 bucks a week.
There were times, he said, when
he could hardly make it home
nights.
Reason for Laughs
That's why I laugh when
these stars whine about how
hard they work making movies."
he growled. Let em try haul-1
ing bricks for 50 bucks and
then see how loud they holler."
Davis said Hollywood is the
only place he knows where you
can drag down fabulous dough
for doing practically nothing.
"When you get right down to
it," he said, "an actor only
works a few hours a day. The

around on the set shooting the
bull . . . playing gin rummy . . .
taking a nap ... or just twid
dling his thumbs.
"Where else do you get paid
a fortune for killing time?"

And who else but Hollywood
shells out four-figure paychecks
for such pleasant work? Kissing
beautiful ladies pays much bet
ter, Jim said, than digging
ditches. And it takes less out of
a man.
"I don't even call acting
work," he added. "It's something
almost any actor would rather
do than anything else. He's un
happy when he's not acting. It's
almost larceny to take money
for it."
