Battalion Meeting The 382nd

Thirty-six couples received
square dance instruction diplo
mas at the last session of the
YMCA beginners class last night.
Jack Crump, instructor, was pre
sented with a cartoon "portrait"
of himself and others, represent
ing his diploma as a caller.
The same group will continue
to dance on Mondavs, starting
next week, and will serve as
guinea pigs" for the "Y" callers
group, now being organized by
R. L. Jones, general "Y" secre
tary. Jones says that callers are
made through practice only, and
Mondays will be the practice
night.
Any square dancers in the val
ley are invited to attend the ses
sions. Glenn Smith recently resigned
as "Y" square dance chairman
due to the pressure of private af

Medford Safety council is
placing Oregon driver's manuals
in service stations of the vicinity
where they will be available to
anyone on request.
Safety council officials said
that it is hoped that the manuals
will be distributed mostly among
out-of-state motorists. The group
has obtained 2,000 copies of the
booklet. Robert R u c k e r will

Animal Mutilator Gets
Six-Month Jail Term
Albert E. Ryder, Jackson
ville, who pleaded guilty in Jus
tice court Saturday to a charge
of mutilating male dogs belong
ing to his neighbors, was sen
tenced to six months in the coun
ty jail Monday and was fined
$100 plus $4.50 court costs.
The complaint against Ryder
was filed by Mrs. Sydney G.
Richardson of the state humane
society. She appeared in court
with evidence she had gathered
at the scene of the crime and
received permission of the court
to deprive Ryder of the owner
ship of the dog he now has and
any he may get in the future,
she said.
Two grandchildren, who were
taken from Ryder at the time
he was arrested last week, are
now in the care and custody of
the public welfare commission
on a temporary committment or
der from the juvenile court. Ju
