At 'Deadly' Poison

is raising a race of super-flies.
DDT. the insecticide designed
to kill flics, is just making them
tougher. Folks thought the house
fly was on the run when scient
ists introduced the new bug-killer
in 1943. But they didn't reck
on with the adaptability of the
fly.
Tougher flics began to develop
a resistance to DDT after 14 gen
erations. They became almost
totally immune after 58 genera
tions. These flics have 150 to 250
times the resistance to DDT as
the ordinary house fly. The
super-race resists not only DDT
but other insecticides.
Now A. W. Lindquist, an ento
mologist at Oregon State college.
wants to see w h a t makes Ihe
super-fly lick. He is treating flies
with tiny droplets of radio-active
DDT )ust to see what goes on in
side their bodies.
After the fly is placed under
a Geiger counter, the scientists
can tell how much of the DDT
has been absorbed.
When experimenters discover
how the super-fly staves off the
poison, it will be an important
step toward finding a newer in
secticide that will work.

Agree on Work Pact
Chicago. June 5 (U.R) Inter
national Harvester company and
union officials reached agree
ment today on an amended two
y e a r contract covering 27.000
workers at 11 farm equipment
plants.
The union involved is the Unit
ed Farm Equipment Workers,
which joined the left-wing Unit
ed Electrical Workers upon ex
pulsion from the CIO.
Company officials said the
agreement includes liberalized
health and welfare plans without
added cost to employes.
