Br Johnny Ar- n
rreetinKs to the new member
of our staff . . . one Tom Mc
Leod. A good many of you will
tee this new addition tomorrow
night at the senior high. He's a
pretty good looking Joe, and we
think you'll appreciate this new
addition. Tom's from southern
California, where the sun como
warm, but even he has to admil
the last few days here in the val
ley have been on the farm side.
Welcome to the fraternity. Tom.
and may your stay be long and
pleasant.
One more night until the big
night tomorrow at the senior
high auditorium. Those tickets
are still on sale at the "Y" ... at
Pruitt's . . . Puruckers . . . Mc
Lain's . . . both banks . . . and at
Mann's. With that list, there are
probably more places for ticket
distribution . . . than there art
tickets, at this late date. Bette
hurry if you want any. "Wel
come to Hollywood" . . . with
Jack McElroy.
Tickets are coming up soon for
the Rogue River Roundup, but
we'll tell you more about that on
Sunday.
If you haven't heard about
Tune-O, stick around until Mon
day at 6:45 p.m. If you want to
i play Tune-O, better get the play
ing cards now at McLain's Drug,
on North Central. Just ask for
your Tune-O card, and the rest
will come easy.

MAGIC MEDICINE FROM
3. Actlva and
If anyone immediately after
undressing proceeds to the more
violent movements before he has
softened the
whole body
and thinned
the excretions
and opened
the pores,
(wrote Galen
1700 years ago)
he incurs the
danger of
break i n g or
straining some
of the solid
parts, but if
bef o r e h a n d
you gradually
warm and soft
en the solids and thin the fluids
and expand the pores, the person
exercising will run no danger of
breakiug any part.
We can pardon Galen for his
notion of "pores" but not you
ninnyhammera who sound off
about closed or open pores to
day. A pore is an opening or
orifice through which something
is or can be absorbed. Nothing
of the sort in the human skin.
The skin, if unbroken, never ab
sorbs anything.
Galen's advice to athletes or
others who engage in vigorous
or violent exertion of any kind
is still sound. It is the way of all
physical trainers. It prevents
"charleyhorse" rupture of mus
cle fibres by sudden violent con
traction of the cold muscle. It is
one reason why all baseball
pitchers "warm up" before go
ing to the mound. Also why ath
letes require a period of moder
ate exercise beore any race or
contest. The other reason for
"warming up" is, of course, to
get the circulation, respiration,
oxidation process, metabolism
into the state of greatest effic
iency. Immediately following a per
iod of hard muscular work or
play it is advisable to put on
sweater or other clothing, avoid
wind or cool draft and take only
a warm bath if any. Then, after
a rest of an hour or so, either
lying down and napping, or sit
ting or moving or strolling idly
about, it is advisable to go for a
brisk walk of a mile or two or
take some other moderate gen
eral exercise. This should be re
peated several hours later. All of
this is the best way to prevent
muscle soreness or lameness or
stiffness from developing the
day after the game, race or con
test. Please, knuckleheads, do not
show your ignorance by ascrib
ing the development of such
muscle soreness as "catching
cold." There is no illness involv
ed and no particular danger of
any. Not even rheumatism, if
you have any quaint fancies
about that.
Whether the athlete sweats
much or little is of no particular
importance so far as preventing
muscle soreness after exertion.
Such soreness or other un
pleasant consequence does not
NEVER-NEVER LAND
PattWe Htat
occur from careless or deliber
ate quick cooling after one has
become overheated artificially,
say from a hot air bath or from
confinement in overheated room
or from exposure to extremely
warm weather. Abrupt cessation
of sweating in such circum
stances is perfectly harmless.
Nothing in the sweat but salt
and water nothing of any spec
ial significance. No overproduc
tion of combustion products in
muscle tissues to be removed
through the circulation. There
fore not the slightest danger at
tends quick cooling of the body
after passive overheating, if one
finds quick cooling refreshing or
comfortable.
