Suggest casually that a trip to
California would be fun, and
most Oregoniana of modest
menna look at you like you have
rocks in your head and ask you
sarcastically, "On what?"
Yet a round-trip by automo
bile can be made to one of the
most scenic purta of California
tn only three dnys, aeelng most
all of western Oregon en route,
and expenses kept to a mini
mum almost any workingman
can afford.
We found this out on an Ore
gonian motorlog to the Red
wood Empire in the Oregon
State Motor association white
car early this month.
Ideal loop trip from Portland
to the Redwood Empire is
down the inland route, U. S.
99 to Grants Pass, southwest
over U. S. 199 to Crescent City
(here the motorist can decide if
he haa time, money and the de
sire to drive south to Eureka)
and along the coast route,
U. S. 101.
Only 20 mUea off U. S. 199,
between Grants Pass and the
state line, lie the Oregon caves,
biiarre and scenic underground
caverns. A side trip to the caves
takes only about four hours.
' Travelers trom uregon can
see plenty of redwoods by going
only as far aa Crescent City,
Cal.. but the added 170-mile
round trip from Crescent City
to Eureka is amply repaid with
additional vistas of a rugged
coastline, and many miles of
roadside redwood groves.
Humboldt bay, on which Eu
reka now stands, was first dis
covered by a sailing ship crew
of the Great Russian American
company in 1806.
The bay was rediscovered by
a party of gold miners who
reached ft by land in 1849. An
other gold-seeking party sailed
. into the bay from the sea in
1850, the year In which the town
of Eureka was founded.
The tourist could spend sev
eral daya sightseeing in this pic
turesque, century-old seacoast
town.
Turning back north and up
the coast, first stop la quiet Ar
eata, at one time the turbulent
Uniontown, terminus for the
rich Trinity mines. This once-

roaring camp furnished the char
acters and setting for many of
Bret Harte's stories.
Just over 11 miles north of
Eureka and only one mile to the
right up Mad river is a 30-acre
azalea reserve. Five miles fur
ther up U. S. 101 is a perplexing
airfield with forests 01 lights
and wires. This is the landing
aids experiment station, where
fog dispersal experiments are
being tarried on.
Only 23 miles north of Eli
reka, Trinidad Head juts out
into the Pacific, scores of tiny
fishing boats anchored in the lee
of its southern shore.
And now back into the red
woods, the highway curving and
winding through miles of state
parks. The bureau of state parks
overruled the highway commis
sion, and forced the highway
builders to lay out the road
around the trees, instead of cut
ting them down.
One "must" stop is the Prairie
creek state park and elk pre
serve. Here live (and now mul
tiply) the sole remaining band
of Wapiti elk in California.
And here's something that
will be of interest to those who
prefer, or find it economically
necessary, to camp on their trip
to the redwoods. The state of
California has a very progres
sive program of forest camps.
The redwoods extend north of
Crescent and even slightly over
into Oregon. On U. S. 199 the
Mill Creek redwoods. Just nine
miles northeast of Crescent City,
are unsurpassed in beauty.
A recommended side trip is
up the Smith river cut-off,
which runs from the Smith river
bridge on 199, about eight miles
northeast of Crescent City, down
Smith river to its mouth, which
lies between Crescent City and
Brookings.
The cut-off is an old, but pass
able road. The grandeur and
size of the redwoods through
which it runs are accentuated
by the narrowness of the road.

ment. Since the start of home build
ing a year and a half ago on the
455-acre tract bn the Old Crater
Lake highway, 42 houses have
been erected, a few of them be
ing still in process of comple
tion, according to Whittle, who
said about two-thirds of the sites
have been sold.

Officials today confirmed the
sale of the 18-story Public Serv
ice building, Portland's tallest,
to the New England Mutual Life
Insurance company for $3 million.

Frown on Modern Changes
New York. June 2 (U.R) The
unitiated might think there was
another tong war brewing in
New York s Chinatown.
There's a change in the spring
breeze that tinkles the glass
beaded curtains along Mott and
Pell streets.
The youngsters in their smart
American suits, are all for it.
But the elders shake their heads
in bewilderment, as though
someone had handed them a plas
tic chopstick.
Town Must Co
The prophets of modern hous
ing have turned a coldly calcu
lating eye on Chinatown and an
nounced that the little oriental
city-within-a-clty must go. A
state housing commissioner put
the project in words as business
like as a divided report. China
town, he said, isn't exciting or
unusual or quaint it's plain
squalid and dirty. The thin
streets that wander timidly
through the district aren't pic
turesque, they're impossible. The
musty buildings leaning one
against the other, their bright
red paint peeling oft In the sun
well's they're not entrancing,
they're mouldy traps.
The commissioner says what's
needed in Chinatown is a batch
of spanking new skyscrapers
big housing .developments with
a shower for every family, an
elevator to whisk folks up and
down to their apartemnts and
crisp, clean stores on the ground
floor, with aluminum shelves
glittering under the flourescent
light.
Landscaping Urged
The commissioner doesn t want
to go too far, of course. He rec
ommends formal landscaping be
tween the buildings with Chi
nese gardens and bushes. He says
some of the buildings could re
tain the ancient style of architec
ture by being crowned with
pagodas.

picture he gets convinces him
he's asleep having a nightmare.
Mtrchant Unhappy
It's the same for many another
Chinatown shopkeeper.
Cheng Din, a merchant of
some thousand moons in China
town, is unhappy but also not at
all surprised at what's happen
ing. He says he saw the hand
writing on the wall 12 years ago.
He has a little shop where he
and his cronies gather to play
mah jong, a kind of Chinese
dominoes.
Chang says: "I knew we were
doomed the day they put a juke
box and a soda fountain in the
place."
