night as the Medford Rogues
swept a doubleheader with Eu
gene and thereby took the cur
rent series between the two
teams, two games to one.
The wins put the Rogues at
the top of the pack in Far West
league standings, nine percentage
points ahead of Redding. Klam
ath Falls, in losing 17 to 11 to
tf ending yesterday, dropped irom
first to tnird place.
Medford captured the curtain-
raiser, 1 to 0, on a pretty squeeze
play bunt about five feet in front
of the plate in the eighth Inning
by Player Manager Tommy Nel
son that scored Russ Stuart from
third base. Stuart had gone to
tnird on two errors by tne Eu
gene Larks.
The game had been a pitcher's
battle up to that point between
the Rogues' LaVerre Herrmann
and Eugene's Frank Chase, with
Chase giving up but two hits and
Herrmann tour.
Second game was just the op
posite with the Rogues using six
pitchers, including Nelson him
self, and the Larks putting in
five.
Medford put on one of its
thrilling last minute rallies to
pull the nightcap out of the fire
with a 17 to 13 margin as the
Rogues tallied six in the seventh
and three more in the eighth.
Eugene had pushed over nine
runs in the fourth.

High Jump Decidas
Despite the larger margin, the
meet was another thriller with
the final event, the high jump,
deciding the issue. The South
got off to an early lead and
held it through the first seven
events. In the eighth contest, the
880-yard run, Portland gained
first, second and fourth places
to tie the count at 44 to 44.

Medford's relay crew was first,
Roosevelt of Portland's second
and Klamath Falls' third to put
the South back in front 60V4 to
58'. In the high Jump Badorek
and Holzgang, Klamath Falls;
Donaldson, Grants Pass, and
Torson, Grant of oPrtland, all
tied for first. The South gained
8 '.4 of the 11 points offered.
Morris Sets Record
The evening was cool, with a
stiff breeze blowing before the
sun set, and only one record
fell. Jack Morris of Medford
ran the 200-yard low hurdles in
:22.5 to knock one-tenth second
off the time he established last
year.
Medford contributed a big
31Vi points to the southern
cause and Klamath added 21V4.
Roosevelt led Portland with
1512 and Grant had 12.
Medford high's state champs
aided with five of the Souths
seven clean-cut firsts. Jack ollr
ris won the 100-yard dash and
low hurdles for the night's only
double win. Frank Morris
nabbed the high hurdles. Lou
Bittle took the 440-yard run
and the Black Tornado relay
team. Bill Buckingham, Bill
Pruitt, Lou Bittle and Jack oMr
ris, got the other blue ribbon.
Additional Medford scoring
was Warren Wenrit tied for third
in the pole vault, Rober Hobbs
fourth in the mile, Frank Morris
and Hal Faulkner third and
fourth, respectively, in the low
hurdles and Bill Buckingham
fourth in the 220-yard dash.
Morris Pressed
Contests that matched Jack
Morris and Roosevelt's Neil An
derson were thrillers as pre
dicted, although Anderson
wound up second best. The Port
lander pressed Morris to the low
hurdle record and lost to the
Medfortdite by a scant foot in the
century dash. In the relay noin
ran anchor for their teams, mor
ris got off to about an eight-yard
lead on the Roughrlder, who
quickly spurted and cut the mar
gin down to three yards. He
could gain no more on the Med
ford Ironman, however.
In the quarter-mile duel be
tween Bittle and Vcrn Swanson
of Lincoln, the Medfordile, trail
ing the Portlonder In the back
stretch, suddenly burst In front,
cut to the pole and held his lead
to the finish tape.
Frank Morris won his hurdles
race with a two-stride lead over
Darrell Corkery of Klamath.
There, were three exhibitions,
the Javelin, the discus and a
grade school relay. D. C. Mills
of Medford tossed the spear 176
feet 4 inches and his teammate.
Don Vincent, rhucked it 153
feet 9 inches. The Washington
(Medford) grade relay four beat
a local grade all-star team.

Sacramento's big Matt Surkont
tossed his tenth Pacific Coast
league baseball win last night as
the Solons won the opening
game of a double header from
Oakland at Sacramento 4 to 2.
Sacramento paraded their
pitchers in the second round.
Bill Bevens started for Sacra
mento but gave .way to Tom
Rose in the third. Glen Lierman
came in to pitch the fifth, fol
lowed by Jess Dobernic in the
same inning. Junior Thompson
took over in the seventh to fin
ish the second game as Oakland
blasted an 18 to 9 win.
Still Third
In splitting the doubleheader,
Oakland retained its third-place
standing in the league, three
games away from second-place
Hollywood.
Other doubleheaders played
around the league resulted in
Hollywood winning the first
game over San Dieeo 8 to 3 and
dropping the second 4 to 0. San
rrancisco took two from Seattle,
the first at a 12 to 6 score, the
last 8 to 7, and Portland and
Los Angeles split, with the
Angeles winning the opener 4 to
2, Portland defeatine in the sec
ond 9 to 0.
Baumholii Hits
Portland salvaged their series
with Los Angeles by splitting
the Sunday's doubleheader and
managed to remain in the first
division, tied with Los Angeles.

for a bout with another German
heavyweight, classy Coony Rux.
Walcott, 36-year-old American
Negro, gashed big Ten Hoff's
brows and mouth and broke his
nose while hammering out a
unanimous 10-round decision be
fore 30,000 in the rain, hail and
sunshine at Mannheim's large
new stadium yesterday.
It was Ten Hoff's first 'profes
sional defeat.
German Groggy
The squat, bull shouldered
Negro from Camden, N. J., was
unable to floor Ten Hoff; but he
had the towering German so
groggy in the fourth round that
many of the 6,000 Americans
soldiers and civilians yelled
"timber! timber!" as they waited
for Ten Hoff to fall like a
chopped-down tree.
Although Ten Hoff, the Ger
man heavyweight champion, was
six years young than Jersey Joe
and outweighed him 199 25
pounds to 182'4, the American
outboxed and outfought him in
nearly every round. He broke
Hein's nose in the second round
with a looping right the same
kind of punch that had floored
Joe Louis three times in their
two title fights.
