Two Hollywood

A "Sunset and Vine" atmos
phere will prevail in Medford
Saturday night when two famous
Hollywood personalities combine

one of the nation's top square
dance callers, is the second rep
resentative of the entertainment
capital to show his wares for the
i brnetit Saturday evening.
He will conduct another big
square dance jamboree in the i
hiyh school gvmnasium. Dancers
and spectators will appreciate
the talents of Hoheisal as he j
calls many of the numbers so j
much in demand on nis records.

'Spreader-Sticker'
Advised for Sprays
The use of a good "spreader-
sticker" with DDT. parathion or
EPN snravs increases their ef.
fectiveness somewhat, County
Agent C. B. Cordy said today in
a renort for orchardists.
Uorrty said tnat it tne sprays
are applied to the trees without
the SDreader-sticker thev will
cling to the leaves unevenly and
will tend to run off. certain ma
terials applied with the sprays
will give a smooth, even cover-
nap nnd will cause the chemicals
to stick to the leaves while only
the water drops off.
The use of one-quarter to one
third pint of a liquid spreader
sticker such as Multifilm L or
DuPont spreader-sticker would
be desirable in the first cover
spray if parathion or EPN ia
used, according to Cordy.
Spreaders appear to be rather
inrffictive when used with
TEPP, he reported.

Long Beach, Cal., smashed ev

runs in turning one lap of 2Va
miles in 136.013 miles per hour
and the 10-mile test at 134.343.
Sitting on the pole with that
record, he stacked up as a cinch
to give the speedway veterans
a chance to chase him for many
a mile.
Other first-timers in the event
were Cecil Green, Dick Rath
man, Jim Davies, one-legged Bill
Schindler, all with qualifying
speeds over 130 miles per hour;
Pat Flaherty. Jerry Hoyt and
Gene Hartley. The latter three
all bettered 129 miles per hour to
crash into the starting field,
which averaged 131.044.
Ex-Winner Ready
To compete with the rookies
there are two former winners,
last year's victor. Bill Holland,
and Mauri Rose, who captured
the checkered flag single-handed
in 1947 and 1948 and won a co
victory with Floyd Davis in
1941.
Other veterans included

Wafer Meters in
Rogue River City
Read First Time
Rogue River. May 29 The
newly installed water meters in
the City of Rogue River were
read for the first time May 29
nd will be read each month
heieafter at approximately the
same date, states Mayor rred
Dengler. He cautions water us
ers to be conservative with wa
ter during the first month un
til they become accustomed to
the metered service.
'Many residents can recall
times during the previous sum
mers when the reservoir was
empty and there wasn't a drop
of water in the pipes. During
one such period the fire siren
sounded," he related, "but we
were lucky, the fire was not
in town.
Fire Protection First
"We must have sufficient wa
ter for fire protection this .sum
mer, 'and we are asking every
one to cooperate with the water
deparament in solving our prob
lem.
The water meters are expected
to help conserve the supply.
They will also furnish the de
partment with accurate figures
on the amount of water neces
sary to serve the town and for
adequate fire protection at all
times. It is helieved the present
wells with the new pump will
furnish enough water, said
Dengler, but if not. other sources
of water must be developed with
the revenue from the meters.
"We want the peonle to keep
their yards and gardens grow
ing." said Dengler. "and we
would like to promise them low
er water rates, but first we must
have enough water for safety
and at the same time put the
water system on a paying basis,
for there are still outstanding
water bonds to be paid."
