Over 50,000
Jobs Since M
Salem, Ore., May 25 (U.R)
More than 50,000 personi have
gone back to work since mid
winter, the state unemployment
compensation commission re
ported today.
' The unemployment recovery
got off to a rushing start during
February and March, then slow
ed down somewhat in April and
early May. About half of those
returning to work went back to
construction and lumbering jobs.
To Tak Up Slack
With at least 10,000 college
end high school graduates to be
added to the labor force next
month and many more looking
for vacation jobs, officials look
ed for much of the slack to be
taken up by the delayed harvest
and other early summer jobs.
Non-farm employers reported
408,300 working in mid-April,
compared with 408,000 last year
and 413,500 two years ago.
Reports from more than 1,000
representative employers
throughout Oregon showed the
number of employed in manu
facturing in mid-April to be
3,600 fewer than a year ago and
nearly 9,000 under the high
established in the spring of 1948.
Non-manufacturing, on the oth
er hand, reached record figures
for april with trade, service and
government leading the way.
The government gain of 2,200
over April, 1949, was accounted
for largely by temporary census
enumerators on duty last month.
Rehiring Slows
Lumber and wood products
generally were employing
14.000 more persons in mid
April than at the height of the
cold spell nearly three months
before, but re-hiring slowed dur
ing the past few weeks. The 73,
400 on last month's payrolls
were 1.600 fewer than a year
aao and 4.300 under the April.

able months in recent years, but
all showed gains over the mid
winter reports. Non-durable
goods also were slow in re-hiring
workers, but June harvests were
expected to bring delayed gains
in food processing.
Local offices listed nearly 41,
000 persons as actively seeking
jobs May 1, compared with 50,
300 a year before. But some of
the difference was believed due
to the increase in the number of
those who exhausted their un
employment compensation bene
fit riehts for the current fiscal
year ending June 30. About 30,-
uoo have drawn maximum com
pensation for the 1949-50 benefit
year compared with about 17,
000 a year ago.
Offices Reoort Increase
Every local office area of the
state reported increase in em
ployment in April. A labor dis
pute settlement sent 1,400 back
tn work at Toledo. Bie gains in
employment were reported from
Salem, Eugene, Grants Pass and
Lebanon. Only three officers
Pendleton, The Dalles and Tilla
mook reported more without
work than a year before. The to
tal of 40,952 unemployed was
348 under two years ago.
Unfilled job openings reported
by the 29 local offices increased
from 1,121 to 1,197 during April.
The figure was slightly below
the 1949 figure and about half
the number listed May 1, 1948.
