it necessary to be absorbed in
hnok for something like an hour,
While he was gone, a mischiev
ous fellow member opened the
package and found a lot of Boxes
labeled yummies.
That sounded interesting, so
the scallywag decided on a prac
tical joke.
He opened the boxes, dug up
some fancy little dishes and put
the goodies around on the vari
ous tables.
It was approaching the cock
tail hour when newspapermen
after a hard day at the office,
sometimes drop up to the 13th
floor for a soft drink, or some
thing. Pretty soon they started
pouring in.
Carleton (Bill) Kent of the
Chicago Sun-Times was the first
to nibble on the appetizers.
"Mmmm." he said, crunching
"These things are good. It was
nice of the board of governors
to break the rules and give us a
free snack.

Mexico City (U.R) The famed
Pan American Highway finally
is nearing completion in Mexico
but it's a "road to nowhere."
It ends abruptly in the jungles
at the Guatemalan border.
Sixty miles away in Guate
mala lies the next stretch of the
great continental roadway. Until
the Guatemalan government ap
propriates new road-building
funds, tourists who plan to mo
tor into Central America simply
will have to wait.
Neither Mexico or Guate
mala has any hope of connecting
their terminals of the projected
Alaska-to-Argentina highway
this year.
Road Goes Nowh.r.
The strange situation of a road
that goes nowhere was created,
Mexican engineers claim, when
they were asked by Guatemnla
to lay their section of the high
way to a tiny border village
named El Ocotal.
One Guatemalan road already
stretched to the frontier at Tapa
chula, only a few miles from the
Pacific coast. Mexico originally
had planned to join its 2,200
miles of paved and graded all
weather Pan American highway
to the Tnpachula roarihead.
However, the road linking Ta
pachula and Guatemala Citv is
passable only In dry weather,
and Guatemalans a p p a r e n tly
hoped to open an additional
northern route into their coun
try via El Ocotal rather than im
prove the mountainous, danger
ous southern route.

high command," he bellowed, "is

asked.

Warren.
Turn Unlovely Green
A startled look broke out on
Carclton Kent and spread around
the room as the gentlemen of the
press turned an unlovely green
around the gills.
In this situation. Warren de
livered himself of a slight ora
tion on the evils of the cocktail
hour.
"As a matter of fact," he said
"you fellows probably are bet
ter off eating yummies. They're
nutritious. It says so right here."
Whereupon, Warren produced
"yummie" box cover which
said:
"The tasty snack for dogs and
cats. Each crispy, crunchy piece

and ei'ioy . . . Fortified with
pure, cod-liver oil and ye ?st , . ,
Excellent for in between feed
ing . . . Reward for good behavior
or for performing a trick.

good behavior. But they're pass
ing up all such rewards.
