The monthly meeting of the
Southern Oregon Conservation
and Tree Farm association will

HEART DISEASE
The victims of heart disease
fall into four different classes.
First is the class in which al
though heart
disease is pres
ent, no limita
tion of activity
is imposed up
on the patient
because of it.
The second
class involves
those who suf
fer slight lim
itation of activ
ity because of
heart disease.
The third class
suffers moder
ur. Brady
ate limitation of activity and the
fourth class suffers marked lim
itation of activity because of
heart disease.
Rheumatic fever In childhood
is the cause of 90 of heart dis
ease which assumes importance
in pregnancy. Perhaps 3 To of all
pregnancies are complicated by
heart disease.
Before the advent of modern
obstetrics, infection and hemor
rhage were the chief concern of
the doctor at childbirth. Control
of intection and hemorrhage has
been largely mastered in the
light of the advance of obstetri
cal science, leaving heart dis
ease as the chief concern today.
Even in the face of modern
knowledge of heart disease, it is
perhaps safe to say that about
20 of mothers dying in child
birth or shortly afterward, do so
because of heart disease. As a
matter of fact, a good share of
this 20 pei'haps most of it
covers tnose wno die in tne sixtn
and seventh month of pregnancy.
I am frequently asked about
the prospects of pregnancy and
childbirth, by young women with
heart disease who are contem
plating marriage. It is very diffi
cult to offer advice in specific
cases, but in general I am in
clined to the view that persons in
class 3 and 4. previously men
tioned, should be very carefully
examined by a physician before
marriage and should not marry,
if so advised,
There are doubtless many per
sons who enter into marriage
with the thought that contracep
tive measures will control the
matter of pregnancy. To these
people I would say that I do not
share their confidence in the mat
ter. More than one person has
found out that there is often a
difference between what should
happen and what does happen.
Over-all statistics in the mat
ter are not available, but in one
group of over 200 women with
rheumatic heart disease, 17
failed to survive two years after
childbirth.
Expert care and management
throughout pregnancy will often
carry a mother through, where
disaster might otherwise be ex
pected. On the other hand, in
different care might result in
disaster, in a case thought orig
inally to be within safe limits.
Again. I stress the importance of
capable medical supervision of
the entire subject by the phy
sician on the scene.

ley school visited various estab
lishments in Medford yesterday,
accompanied by their teacher,
Miss Leila Van Amburgh.

two banks' and the newsroom and

House Passes Bill for
Alaska Homesteads

i age the settlement of Alaska by
granting special inducements to
j veterans applying for home
steads in the territory.
A similar bil ipassed the nouse
in the 80th congress but died in
the senate.
The measure would permit
veterans to obtain homesteads of
from 320 to 2,560 acres instead
of the standard 160 acres. Only
160 acres of any Alaskan vet
eran homestead, however, could
be composed of arable land. The
remainder of the additional
acreage would be available for
specific use, such as grazing. The
extra acreages could be obtain
ed only with approval of the in
terior department.

clined to gamble on the future.
