Old-Fashioned Coal Oil
May Become Top Jet Fuel
By Paul F. Ellis
United Pren Science Editor
New York, May 25 tU.R)
Old-fashioned coal oil, the same
that grandmother used in her
wick lamp on the kitchen tabic,
may turn out to be the best fuel
for the jct-engined airliner in
this modern world.
At least engineers of one pe
troleum company, the Esso Ex
port corporation, have put them
selves on record as believing that
kerosene, from a standpoint of
safety against fire and for eco
nomical reasons, will be the fuel
of the future airplane.
Told in Article!
The company's position Ls con
tained in an article by Alexander
Ogston, of the firm's aviation
department and which appears
In the current Issue of Esso Ari
World.
Ogston at a press conference
here mid that while the conven
tional type of airplane engines
will be built for at least 10
years, eventually the big air-

liners will be jet-propelled. Oth
er scientists have said that 500
mile an hour speed will be or
dinary. The high octane gasoline, now
being used for aircraft fuel,
comes high in price and avia
tion experts agree that a better
fuel from a cost standpoint will
be necessary when jct-propollcd
airliners are common.
Higher Safety Standard
Ogston, whose statements
were approved by the oil com
pany, said "there is little doubt
that a fuel of the general char
acteristics of kerosene comes
closest to satisfying the require
ments." "On the subject of relative
fire hazards, there surely can
be no question that the use of a
fuel of similar boiling range and
flash point to kerosene will pro
vide a higher standard of safety
than i.s possible with gasoline,"
he said.
Ogston admitted that there
have been some "severe fires"
following the crash of a jet
fighter plane, using kerosene, but
that surh crashes have been
where the aircraft has hit the
ground at high speed, causing
complete disintegration of the
structure. Eire in such cases was
not th ecause of death.
Ogston said research is now
underway to find means to pro
: teel kerosene from freezing at
1 extremely low temperatures.
Such will be necessary if kcro-
sene is ever adopted for military
planes that may be based in arc
i tic regions.

Rocket Expert
Plans on Journey
Into Stratosphere
Chicago, May 25 (U.R) Eu
gene Maynor today tested models
of the engines on his 28-foot
rocket ship while preparing for
his craft's maiden flight into the
stratosphere.
Maynor, who has worked on
rocket research for 30 years,
said this was the 03rd tryout he
has given his rocket engines
which are powered by nitric
acid and alcohol.
Lot of Work Yet
"We may be ready to take off
in six weeks," he said, "but there
is a lot of work to be done be
fore we're ready for that."
Maynor said his rocket will
carry only one man but that lat
er he hopes to build larger ones.
He said Lt. Col. Howard Ma
rueywn of the Cook County Air
Force Reserve Officers associa
tion, is his pilot and will guide
the rocket on its initial flight.
Lifting Force
He said he believes the rocket
will soar 27 miles into the strat
osphere. It has a lifting force of
6,000 pounds, he said.
He conducts tests on small
scale models of the rocket en
gines in Chicago but said he has
to take the real engines out into
the country before starting them.
"They shoot flames 50 feet
behind," he said, "and you can
hear them four or five miies
away."
He said he started one in the
city once "and it scared a lot of
people."
Scout Troop 9 lo
Honor Scoutmaster
Boy scouts of Troop 9 and
their families are planning a pic
nic dinner to honor Dr. W. H.
Roberts in appreciation of his
work as scoutmaster of the troop.
It will be held next Sundav at
Twin Plunges in Ashland at 2:30
p. m.
"Dr. Roberts is doing an out
standing Job as leader of this
troop," a parents representative
said, and this picnic dinner is to
be a small token of our appre
ciation." Boy scout officials state that
during the year and a half Dr.
Roberts has been troop leader,
the troop has grown from six
boys to about 45, and that growth
in advancements and in special
activities has been notable. Four
out of the five patrols in Rob
erts' troop won blue ribbons at
the recent camp-o-rcc.
Each family of scouts belong
ing to this troop, sponsored by
the Christian church in Mcdford,
is requested to bring its own
service and picnic dinner. Ice
cream will be furnished, parents
in charge said.
