A note for the west side: The
West Side school was through
the studios on Thursday, to get
all the info possible on those
strange noises from their radio
speakers. Hope they enjoyed the
trip . . . and who knows, from
that group may come the Ken
Carpenter or Don Wilson of the
future. Our welcome mat is al
ways out, so how about some
more visitors.
The city of Winnipeg has plen
ty of water troubles, but the
sound man on "This Is Your
FBI" could just about match it.
On a recent program in the se
ries. Producer Jerry Devine
used rain effects in every scene
to just about run the water de
partment dry. A total of 755 gal
lons of water were used in all to
get the desired effect. That may
not be too much on a warm sum
mer day, but in a studio, it could
be pretty sloppy.
Short column today. The day
this went into print was far too
nice to be sitting in front of a
typewriter. Hope your having
.the same kind of day today . . .
and you'll understsnd what we
mean.

Radio Script Wins
Prize for Writer
Mrs. Robert Duncan, 215 King
street, has won a $250 prize for
submitting a suggested script for
the "Dr. Christian" radio pro
gram, in a nation-wide contest, it
was reported today.
Mrs. Duncan, wife of an attor
ney here, is a member of a newly
formed writers club, and her
proposed script for the program,
which stars Gene Hersholt, was
written in connection with proj
ects undertaken by club mem
bers. Being the first member to
have her work accepted, Mrs.
Duncan automatically becomes
president of the club, under rules
formulated by the aspiring writ
ers. The date on which her script
will be used by the program was
not learned this week, but will
presumably be announced prior
to the broadcast.

SMOKING IS BAD
Although most physicians for
bid smoking when the patient
shows any symptoms or signs of
thrombo angi
itis obliterans
(Buerger's dis
ease), some
physicians ar
gue that if
smoking were
the cause or
even the chief
cause of this
degeneration of
the arteries the
condition
would be wide
1 y prevalent
here but in fact
Ur. Brady
it Is compara
tively rare. So many young and
middle aged Americans make
hogs of themselves (my apolo
gies to the swine) with their
smoking.
Nowadays there is even a dis
position on the part of some
good physicians to allow cer
tain patients with coronary
thrombosis and certain patients
with angina pectoris to smoke an
after-dinner cigar or an after
breakfast pipe or an after-lunch
cigarette. Only certain patients,
that is patients the physician
believes may derive sufficient
benefit in the psychic (mental or
nervous) to offset untoward ef
fects in the physical field. Oh, as
Bastedo expresses it (Maeria
Medics, Pharmacology and Ther
apeutics): Both through a psychic satis
faction to the habitue and
through a pharmacological nar
cotic effect, a smoke will fre
quently ease nervous tension.
The war taught us the calming
effect on the wounded soldier
of the lighted cigarette handed
to him, and at examinations I
have now and then found a
student in a nervous funk till
allowed a cigarette. Smoking
in moderation may indeed fa
vor that relation in mind and
body that we physicians stress
so much for those with wor
ries, anxiety neuroses and oth
er psychic disturbances.'
In college students Drs. Mad'
dock and Coller observed a rise
of from 8 to 38 beats a minute in
the heart action from smoking a
cigarette. That doesn't jibe with
the idea that smoking In modera
tion eases nervous tension or
favors relaxation in mind and
body.
Dr. Bastedo cites an interest
ing observation made by Stache
lin upon himself. He smoked 6
to 8 cigars a day (shame,
shame, even if they were only
10-ccnt cigars, how can a man
enjoy such -selfish indulgence
when by only moderate restraint
he might save enough to feed or
clothe some unhappy soul?)
for six months (at 50 cents a
day that would come to $90, but
maybe the man thought the ex
periment justified the expense)
then abstained for six months.
During the $90 period his pulse
rate averaged 82. During the pe
riod of abstention his pulse rate
averaged 75. During the $90
period a standard exercise pro
duced a rise to 157 in the pulse
rate. During the period of ab
stention the same exercise pro
duced a rise to 124 in the pulse
rate. The heart took considerable
longer to return to normal after
exercise during the ninety-dollar
period.
Every youth who aspires to
success in athletics knows he
cannot smoke. Nearly all observ
ers find that breathlessness or
windedness comes on earlier in
smokers than in non-smokers.
The heart pumps less blood after
smoking.
The National War Council of
the Y. M. C. A. found that
smoking a cigar lowered accur
acy in rifle shooting, and Fisher
and Berry found the same effect
on baseball throwing with a re
covery of normal accuracy after
a thirty-minutes rest without
smoking.

practical, demonstrable, undebat-
