Does Earth Have a Tail?
Br J. Hugh Pruetl
Astronomer, Extension Division,
Oregon Hlher Education System
In recent newt dispatches we
find an item stating that Prof.
Vaslli Fesenkov, a member of
the Russian academy of sciences,
has come up with the discovery
that our old earth actually has
a long flowing tail probably
something like the appendage
dragged around by enmeta in
their rambles through the wide
planetary spaces, Professor Fes
enkov thinks the tail is likely
about 70.000 miles long. He con
siders his "find" "brand new,"
and says that It absolutely re
futes wrong ideas held by the
bourgeois, especially American
and Swedish scientists.
The good professor hat over
looked that others In the past
have made similar suggestion.
Even a fellow countryman, Dr.
I. S. Astnpowich in 194 "dis
covered" the same tall,
Mentioned In Texts
The phenomenon Professor
Fesenkov is discussing is men
tioned In most astronomy texts
under the name of gegenschein,
or counterglow. It was first care
fully studied and named (it
means "opposite shin e") by
Brorsen in Germany in 1854,
and has since received consid
erable attention from scientists.
It is a faint wnite patch of light
among the stars In almost ex
actly the opposite part of the sky
from the sun. This means that
it will be highest above the
horizon around midnight.
Since the sun apparently
makes an entire trip around the
heavens among the stars during
a year, the gegenschein does the
same. To be seen, the night sky
must be unusually clear and
without moonlight. Since it
looks something like the Milky
Way. when it falls on this white
galactic band. It cannot be de
tected. This is especially true in
December and January, and
again In June and July. Even
a bright star near it may blot
it out.
Oval in Shape
The counter glow is oval in
shape, and the long way meas
ures two and three times the
angular distance between the
pointers of the Big Dipper.
Light-measuring Instruments in
dicate its presence, but only the
keen-eved can detect It visually.
It Is "said that the trick of
"averted vision" aids in seeing
it. This Is accomplished by not
looking directly at the glow and
thus getting the light focused on
a more sensitive part of retina
than the portion directly behind
the pupil.
LUMBER STRIKE AVERTED
Seattle, May 19 (U.R Agree
ment on a 10' i cent hourly pay
hike todav had averted the threat
nf a strike by 10,200 Pugct
Sound lumber workers, members
of the AFL Lumber and Sawmill
Workers.
SPEECHES BANNED
Capetown, South Africa. May
20 (U.R) Radio speeches of trib
ute to veteran statesman Jan
Smuts on his 80th birthday have
been banned by Minister of Posts
and Telegraphs F. C. Erasmus.
The explanation of the gegen
schein is uncertain. Generally it
is considered that It is likely .as
sociated with the zodiacal light,
that delicate pyramid of white
extending up from the western
horlion in the evening after all
twilight has faded, and up from
the east before dawn. There may
be a disk of dust and gases and
meteorltie material extending
a!) around the sun out consider
ably beyond the earth's orbit.
Sunlight on this seemingly could
cause the glow. Only 30 years
ago some thought it was a phe
nomenon of our own atmos
phere, but this now seems un
likely. Maybe the tail theory
has merit.
