Oregon Logger Dies
In Mystery Shooting
St. Helens, Ore., May 19 (U.PJ
George McCollam, 50, logger and
operator of a small sawmill at
Delena, was shot to death and
George Devine. 50, Seattle, was
in critical condition in a Long
view, Wash., hospital as result
of an unexplained shooting near
here yesterday.
Officers said McColIam's body
was discovered about 7 p.m. yes
terday. They said a high power
ed bullet had pierced his chest.
Devine was suffering from a
bullet wound under his heart.
Hospital attendants said he was
not expected to live.
London. May 19 (U.R) Shar-
man Douglas, daughter of U. S.
Ambassador Lewis Douglas,
leaves bv nlane tonight on a
hurried trip to New York "for
personal reasons."

belief that effective use of the
nation's manpower is one of
the main problems of a grow
ing democracy, and that by
presenting information, accur
ately, briefly and clearly, it
hopes to make possible the
widening of its services to the
community, and to workers
and employers.

As the central job agency for
a rapidly growing community,
the local office of the Oregon
state employment service, lo
cated at 45 North Fir street, per
forms many services for the
public, employers and workers.
The Medford office, with a
trained staff of nine persons, is
thoroughly equipped to bring to
gether the qualified worker and
the suitable job, at no charge.
With a six-point plan as the
foundation of its program, the
employment service is interested
primarily in the effective place
ment of the job-seeker, and in
cooperating with the community
and employer to meet all kinds
of employment problems. Be
hind the local representatives
are not only the resources of
Oregon's unemployment com
pensation commission, but also
the services of some 1,800 offices
and 51 state and territorial
agencies throughout the nation.

Two Thugs Sought
Hackensack, N. J., May 19
U.R) Police broadcast a two
state alarm today for two thugs
who beat up Columnist Lee Mor
timer, author of several articles
exposing a national crime syn
dicate. The 45-year-old Mortimer re
ported that the attack took place
yesterday morning in a wash
room at the Riviera nightclub.
Fort Lee, N. J. He charged that
it was an obvious attempt "to
intimidate potential witnesses"
for a forthcoming senate probe
into nationwide crime.
Mortimer said one of the
thugs knocked him unconscious
while the other stood guard at
the washroom door. Sidney
Kingsley, author of the hit play
"Detective Story," who wit
nessed the attack, said the hood
lum struck Mortimer three times
after he was down. Mortimer
suffered eye injuries and facial
lacerations.

American diplomats was order
ed today by President Truman.
He nominated W. Walton
Butterworth, now assistant sec
retary of state, to be ambassador
to Sweden.
H. Freeman Matthews, now
ambassador to Sweden, was
nominated to replace Butter
worth as assistant secretary.

County Road Oiling
Program Under Way
The county's road oiling pro
gram was started yesterday in
the Rogue River area and crews
will work south from there, ap
plying light, dust-setting oil,

ning reported today.
Only the light oils are being
applied at this time, he said, and
the heavy oiling will have to be
delayed until warmer weather
arrives, probably late in June
and into July. Rynning said he
is making an effort to keen traf
fic at a minimum for a day or
two after the roads have been
oiled.

contact Rynning's office in the
county courthouse as soon as
possible. County crews and
equipment provide the service
at cost.
County crews are also at work
this week laying a reinforcing
base in preparation for a new
surface on the Table Rock road
north of Bybee bridge.

CIO Presses Case
Against Bridges'
Longshoremen
Washington, May 19 U.R
The CIO pressed its case today
against Harry Bridges' Interna
tional Longshoremen who are ac
cused of following the commun
ist party line.
If upheld by a special three
man hearing committee, the
charges could lead to expulsion
of the union from the CIO and
Bridges' loss of his seat on the
CIO executive board.
Six other left-wing unions
have been ousted on the same
charges since last fall.

opened yesterday. Neither
Bridges nor members of the
panel would discuss the case.
But it was known the CIO pre
sented a surprise witness in
Michael J. Quill, president of
the CIO Transport VVorkers. He
is a former militant left-winger
