his courtroom appearance. He
was acquitted on a charge of
drunken driving but was arrest
ed as he left the courtroom. A
Justice of the peace fined him
for driving without an operator's
license.

day and weather observers said
more storms could be expected
today.
Damages caused by the hail
storm, which blacked out the
area around Temple at high
noon, were estimated at $1 mil
lion to $1,500,000. There were
no reports of injuries, but some
farmers said hailstones beat their
crops to pulp.
Stampede valley was hit hard
est. At least $500,000 worth of
cotton, corn and grain crops was
destroyed, authorities said.
Hailstones piled Into drifts
two to three feet deep east of
Temple.
Portlander Turns Out
To Be 'Dud' As Robber
Portland, Ore., May 18 U.R)
Joseph L. Schlavone, 35-year-old
waiter, was arrested as a
bank robber yesterday when po
lice caught him inside the up
town branch of the First Nation
al bank.
"As a bank robber, I'm a
dud," Schiavone said later.
Police surrounded the bank
at 12:10 a.m. when a burglar
alarm was sounded. They found
two broken windows in the
quonset-type building and saw
Schiavone crouching behind a
teller's cage.
Schiavone said he threw a
soft drink bottle through the
windows and climbed inside but
was unaware that he had set off
the alarm.
"I didn't hear no bells," he
said.
Officers charged him with
burglary and set bail at $3000.

Whatever has happened to the
mysterious cure for "high blood
pressure that brought hundreds
," of inquiries in

You remember,
don't you. suck
ers? The stuff
purported to be
derived from
garlic or some
thing of the
sort. I suppose
it would not
have appealed
so strongly to
the imagina
tion had it pur
ur. drady
ported to be de
rived from onion or cabbage. Of
course the fact that I receive few
inquiries about it now is suscep
tible of more than one interpre
tation. The nostrum may have
been taken off the market be
cause it failed to sell. The pros
pective customers may have
learned enough to make them
less credulous. Or the first pack
age of pills may have cured every
one and so correspondents are no
longer concerned about "high
blood pressure."
Answering those queries about
the garlic nostrum for "high
blood pressure" I always felt
frustrated. Somehow I antici
pated only one reaction to my
unfavorable opinion of the nos
trum. Unsophisticated persons
who become intrigued by myster
ious or magic remedies or meth
ods of treatment are very likely
to reject and resent an expert
opinion which fails to confirm
their hope or expectation. As a
matter of fact I collected a thick
file of pungent rejoinders from
such persons or their near-doctors,
which satisfied me at any
rate that my teachings made
some impression.
Whether the blood pressure is
high, low or medium is an inci
dental detail in any case. I mean
to say that blood pressure may
be above the normal or below
the normal in a great many dif
ferent disease states. It is as sen
sible to employ a remedy, diet
or method of treatment for high
blood pressure as it would be to
use a particular nostrum or diet
for high pulse rate, high body
temperature, high metabolism.
The blood pressure becomes too
high or too low in consequence of
this or that disease. The blood
pressure is too high or too low
because the patient Is ill with
one thing or another. The illness
or impairment of health is not
due to the high or low blood
pressure. The sooner you get this
through your head, stupid, the
better for your well being and
longevity.
Of all the maltreatment to
which gullible customers are sub
jected or subject themselves for
"high blood pressure" the most
vicious in the long run is prob
ably the salts habit taking fre
quent purgative doses of salts of
one kind or another, in the child
ish fancy that excessive catharsis
will "thin the blood" as tho
high blood pressure were due to
"to rich" or "thick" blood. In
most instances persons who have
high blood pressure are more or
loss anemic their blood is too
"thin" or "poor." The constant
or habitual use of salts not only
damages the kidneys eventually
but interferes with normal assim
ilation of calcium from the food,
and calcium shortage is a com
mon factor of oh, well, let'i say
steadily falling health.
