H-Bomb Existence Questioned in Talk

Dr. L. A. Dubridge, president of
California Institute of Technol
ogy, questioned the existence of
the hydrogen bomb in a talk at
Pacific university last night.
In the talk entitled "Atomic
Weapons and National Defense,"
Dr. Dubridge said that President
Truman merely announced that
"we would continue the develop
ment" of the super-bombs, with
out stating that such weapons
already exist.
The speaker also questioned
the value of hydrogen bombs, as
suming they could be, or have
been, made. He explained that a
bomb 1000 times as powerful as
the atomic bomb would only de
troy an area with ten times the
radius.
Cheer Up, Alex, You're Cleared the First
Hurdle in Becoming Citizen of America
Washington, May 17 (U.R)
This is a note to a French-born
lad of 21 in Houston, Tex., and
several hundred of his buddies
in the American army:
Cheer up, Alex, you're about
to win the long way from the
north African orphanage via the
blood of Anzio beachhead to
this country.
The pals you made in that
dirty business when you were
a kid of 12 or so will be glad
to know that the house has unan
imously passed and sent to the
senate a bill to make you an
American citizen.
No Argument
When the senate passes it and
President Truman signs it,
you're in through the trail of
screaming bombs and rocking
invasion craft in the sea and
sleepless suffering stowed away
in the holds of ships.
There wasn't any argument
about it. But everything about
you, Alex, is in the record up
here. It shows how you ran away
to north Africa from an orphan
age in Lille, France, when you
were 10. The new orphanage
you wound up in was bombed
to smithereens.
It also tells how you went
with the 133rd infantry regi
ment as a 12-year-old mascot
when they whammed through
north Africa, how you ate their
chow, wore the uniform, and
fought like a good soldier.
The files show, too, that you
went in at Anzio with the 174th
ack-ack outfit, and that you
came to the United States with
the boys when the shooting was
over, only to be booted back to
France, which wouldn't take
you because you had no name
no papers to show.
Records Lost
Then, they show how you got
to Lillie, found the old orphan
age gone, bombed out, all chance
of knowing who you really are
lost forever. The records say
that after that you stowed away
on the steamship Walter Raleigh
to get back here, and once stay
ed awake four days because you
didn't know whether you snored
or not and were afraid snoring
might give you away. ,
Your file isn't all compliment
ary. Peyton Ford, assistant to
the attorney general, told con
gress you were having trouble
learning that the rough stuff you
got from the soldiers isn't the
way to conduct yourself as a
civilian. He says you have been
kicked from job to job since
you've been here because you
won't take orders.

But perhaps that petition by
300 buddies of the 34th division
from Iowa and California help
ed. Also, your priest says you
are trying hard as you can. They
say you took that name you
bear because it has an American
ring Alexander Stewart. That
helped, too.
But the thing that probably
took the bumps from the last
mile was a line in a note from
Lou Nora Spiller, assistant at
torney general for the southern
district of Texas.
It said and it sounds through
all the clangor of war with the
ring of a dream come true:
"He lives in the glory of hav
ing worn the American uniform.
He thinks and lives America.
He gave all that he had at a time
when America needed him."
