first baseman throws and fields,
it may be the pitcher's windup
or the batter's uneasy stance.
On occasions he gives an all
too accurate imitation of the um
pire's gesture which might find
him getting the thumb to the de
light of the fans.
Although he confines most of
his efforts to pantomimes, Pat
kin can't resist an occasional
quick retort. Should the umpire
throw up his arms and shout
Time, Patkin is more than apt
to glance quickly at his wrist
watch and yell "about a quarter
to four."
The louder the crewd laughs
the funnier Patkin gets.

favorite in the 24th running of
the Oregon state high school
track and field championships on
Bell field here Friday and Sat
urday. Expects conceded the Black
Tornado from southern Oregon
should successfuly defend its
title without difficulty. In dis
trict results, Medford stars have
posted the best times in three
events and are among the top
three in two others.
Ted Anderson, Newport, ran
a 21.7 race in the 220-yard dash
in district trials to surpass the
state record and the fleet Med

record of 1:31.2 set by another
Medford quartet in 1948.

George Nicholas of Vancouver,
B. C, pitched the first no-hit no
run game of the Western Inter
national league season last night,
blanking Spokane, 7-0.
Vancouver collected 13 hits off
Indian hurler Dick Bishop in
the rout. The game was the sec
ond no-hit no-run contest in the
class 'B' league's 13-year history.
Nicholas didn't let a man past
first base, only seven balls got
out of the infield and he struck
out seven Spokane batters.
Nicholas, who said it was his
first no-hitter in pro ball, said he
relied mainly on his sinking fast
ball and a slider.

Ore., won his seventh straight
game yesterday as he hurled the
Stanford Indians to a 9-4 win
over St. Mary's in a CIBA base
ball game here.
Second Baseman Tom Shaw of
Portland gave Chez strong sup
port in the eighth when his triple
drove in two runs. The Indians
scored five runs during that
frame to cinch the contest and
remain in a tie lead with the
