Favors Law Changes
Portland, Ore., May 16 U.R1
The democratic state central
committee was on record today
as favoring election law changes
to permit use of registrars in
each precinct to sign up voters.
The committee adopted a reso
lution In a lightly-attended meet
ing here Saturday under which
each party would recommend
persons to county clerks for ap
pointment as registrars.

Woman Prisoner's
Suicide Try Foiled
Albany, Ore., May 16 (U.PJ
Mrs. Mina Dee Scott, 50, held in
the city jail here on a drunken
driving charge, attempted to
hang herself Saturday night, of
ficers reported.
Mrs. Scott was cut down when
police discovered she had tied
her blouse to a cell bar. Offi
cers handcuffed her to the cell
door to prevent another attempt.
She was arrested late Friday
after an accident in which two
children riding with her were in
jured. Police said she refused
to allow a doctor to attend the
five-year-old boy injured in the
crash.
Doukhobors Blamed
For Bridge Bombing
Grand Forks. B. C. May 16
(U.RI A Canadian Pacific rail
way bridge was bombed today
and provincial police blamed the
"Sons of Freedom." a radical
branch of the Doukhobors relig
ious sect.
The bombing followed the ar
rest yesterday of 40 "Sons of
Freedom" for nudism. Police
said the bombing apparently was
an act of revenge.
Railroad officials said the
bridce across the Kettle river
would be unusable for several
days.
The latest arrests. Including 13
women, were made on nudism
charges dating back to April 30.
Judith Coplon Plans
To Marry Attorney
New York May 16 (U.R)
Judith Coplon, former govern
ment girl convicted on espionage
charges in Washington and New
York, said today she expected to
be married "within the next few
weeks" to Albert H. Socolov, an
associate of her court-appointed
attorneys.
Miss Coplon. 28. is free on bail
pending appeal of both her con
victions. She said she met Soco
lov in the law office of Ncubur
ser. Shapiro, Rabinowiti and
Boudin.

an ordinary doctor I should be
grateful to the Wiseacres for
enlightenment), what "my ob
stetrician" or "my pediatrist" or
"my psychiatrist" says, and ap
parently the Wiseacres assume
that the specialist's pronuncia
mento will settle my hash.
Without purportine to be any
better qualified to have an opin
ion upon a question of medicine
than a hundred thousand "or
dinary" doctors, I may say that
in my judgment the opinions
and the principles of most "or
dinary doctors in practice are
fully as sound and dependable
as those of trick specialists.
By "trick specialist" I mean
a doctor who competes with the
honest practitioners of the com
munity for public patronage
he tricks the public, or the gull
ible portion of the population,
into believing that because he
calls himself a "specialist" he
knows more or has greater skill
than the "ordinary doctor, the
family doctor, the honest gen
eral practitioner.
According to the medical di
rectory compiled by the national
medical organization there are
approximately 100,000 physi
cians in practice not counting
those filling salaried jobs in va
rious services and institutions
and of these nearly half (over
40.000) are specialists. If the
figures are accurate, then I ven
ture to estimate that less than
5,000 of the practitioners who
hold themselves out as special
ists are real specialists.
By "real specialist" I mean
the doctor who engaged in gen
eral practice for five or 10 years,
became particularly interested
in a special field of practice,
took a leave of absence to pur
sue a course of post-graduate
study in that special field, and
finally withdrew from general
practice and limited his practice
to his chosen special field. He
announced his limitation of prac
tice to his medical colleagues.
His only public announcement
was a line under his name on
his professional sign, card or
office door: Practice limited to
. . . whatever specialty he had
chosen. The real specialist is
hard to find these days, in the
ruck of trick "specialists" who
employ every means to attract
customers away from the family
doctor.
The real specialist first gains
and then holds the respect and
confidence of his colleagues, and
they refer patients or call him
in consultation with them in dif
ficult cases. The real specialist
gives the doctor his opinion or
advice or counsel or skill, but
does not try to supplant the doc
tor as physician to the patient or
family. The real specialist is a
doctor's doctor. We need real
specialists as much as ever, but
I sincerely believe our people
would be better off, economic
ally and in health, if the 35,000
trick "specialists" now infesting

North Atlantic treaty powers re
viewed the Russian threat to the
western world today and discus
sed in general the urgent steps
1hey would take to prevent
another war.
The foreign ministers of the
12 countries met at Lancaster
house for the fourth session of
the North Aaltnaic council
since the treaty was signed. The
talks will go on all this week.
Tomorrow the ministers will
tackle the specific problems of
defense and financing the west's
rearmament program.
The talks were going on in
secret. A member of a delega
tion representing one of the big
powers said:
"We can't tell the enemy what
