Shown above is the route intended for the proposed new water
transmission line from Big Butte springs to Medford to increase
and safeguard the water supply system. On a special city ballot at
tiie primary election Friday. May 19, Medford residents will be
asked to vote on a $2,800,000 bond issue for the construction of
the aqueduct. The board of water commissioners anticipate that no
increase in existing water rates and no tax levies will be necessary
to amortize the cost of the development over the 30-year payment
period. A dam and reservoir at Willow creek is included in the
project to insure the Eagle Point irrigation district its prorata
share of the stream flow from supplementary water. The district
has a larger priority right from the springs than Medford. After
more than two years of study commissioners have determined that
Mcdford's increasing population can best be served by a second
water line. Commissioners have stressed that present water supply
is inadequate and that last summer water use restrictions were
necessitated. They sid that more repairs will become necessary
for the present pipeline and service interruptions will become
more frequent, although the line will last past its previously de
termined life expectancy. Danger of depending upon one line and
the hazard in case of an aqueduct break have been stressed.

Bill Walker Wins Girl Scout Camp
$500 Scholarship

Bill Walker, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Arlie O. Walker, 2241
Jacksonville highway, returned
yesterday from Portland where
he won a $500 first prize schol
arship presented by the Oregon
state branch, American Federa
tion of Labor. Young Walker
who is a member of the 1950
Medford high school graduation
class, took his final exams
toward the scholarship in. Port
land Friday evening. He had
passed preliminary examinations
toward , the scholarship some
time ago.
The scholarship is without re
strictions as to course or college
in " the United States. Walker
plans to study pre-medics at Uni
versity of Oregon, Eugene, ac
cording to Kelly Loe, Portland,
AFL official in charge of the
scholarships.
Mrs. Van Scoy Teacher
Walker's teacher is Mrs. John
nv Van Scoy. It is the second
time that a student, of Mrs. Van
Scoy has won the same scholar
ship and she has also taught cwo
runners-up.
Two other students won the
same amount in the scholarship
exams, Harold Tolliver. Mc
Minnvillc. and Mary Frances
Kimmel. Franklin high school,
Portland.
Three alternate winners each
won $50 cash.

tensive work program and the
larger the number of men that
volunteer, the faster and easier

declared.
Projects Llittd
Among the projects will be the
construction of a fireplace in
the main lodge as a memorial
to Mrs. Raymond Driver, and
installation of a fountain in
memory of Mrs. Gordon Voor
hies. The fountain is a gift from
Colony club.
Other contemplated projects
are shower installation, water
front improvement, woodsplit
ting and painting.
AH work at the camp to date
has been done by volunteers,
fathers of the girls and friends
of scouting.
Col. Stafford and Rollin Jones
were to go to the lake this week
end to look over the camp.

will arrive in Jackson county,
which has a $150,000 quota..
According to. prescut sched
ule, the bell, an exact replica ot
the original American Liberty
Bell, will arrive at Rogue River
at 8:45 a. m., May 24. It will then
be taken on to Gold Hill and
Central Point and should arrive
in Medford about 10 a., m. After
a showing at Medford schools,
the bell will be hauled to Phoe
nix, Talent and Ashland.
Plan Honor Guard
The bell will be returned to
Medford for display between 6
and 7 p. m. A Ford truck, one
of 52 loaned, for the , drive, is
transporting the bell, one of 53
cast in France. Col H. J. Meir
ing will head a guard of honor
while the bell is in the county
and seniors from high schools in
the county will form a color
guard. i
The bell will be turned over
to the state on July 4.
