First Paratrooper Info France Still In Army, a Legend
Fort Bragg, N. C. U.R The
first paratrooper who landed in
Normandy that June morning
six years ago is still around, still
with the army, and still in the
same line of work.
He is Capt. Frank Lyllyman
of Skaneateles, N. Y. He led the
first stick of 18 men from the
first planeload of "pathfinders"
for the 101st Airborne Division,
to light the way for the main
body, in the World War II invas
ion of France.
Two hundred men followed
him on that trail-blazing mission
the morning of June 6, 1944. One
hundred and six came out alive.
Last month, Capt. Lyllyman
took part in the army's giant
maneuvers in North Carolina
which has been named "Exer
cise Swarmer."
This time he was a traffic
director. It should be easy for a
man who guided in aOO plane
loads of 101st Airborne para
troopers in the middle of the
night in a strange country held
by five German divisions.
Lyllyman was the one you
read about who spent his home'
coming in a New York hotel
with all expenses paid after he
wrote a national magazine tell
ing how he would like to have
it when he got home.
His wife and youngster had
the fanciest room in the hotel.
He had breakfast in bed, news
papers read to him, a barber to
unwhisker him, and so on
through the list of luxury items.
Legend in Army
He is an almost legendary
character. His picture lives in
Army history books concerning
Normandy. When it became ap
parent he would be the first to
jump into Normandy, a camera
was strapped to his chest and
his facial expressions were
caught on the downward trip

Benedict said development of
solar energy as a continuous
source of power "will etime any
way, so we might as well lay a
solid groundwork for the com
ing generations."
Atomic Power Limited
"When our dwindling supplies
of coal, oil, and gas are gone,
hnrncsscd sunshine may well bp
our number one source of
energy." he said.
"Limited amounts of the two
fissionable elements uranium
and thorium, will control the
broad scale applications of ato
mic power, But it seems very
unlikely that atomic power will
ever supply any large propor
tion of our total energy require
ment." Benedict said one practical
way of capturing the energy now
lost when the sun's rays are re
flected off the earth's surface is
by optical means, "the old mag
nifying glass principle."
"In this way." he explained,
sunlight can be concentrated
about 50.000 times to produce
very high-temperature furnaces.
Russia is reported to have a solar
boiler operating with super-heated
steam at almost 900 degrees
lanrenheit.
Research Under Way
He said direct conversion of
the sun's radiation into electrical
energy is the engineer's dream.

search in photo-chemistry, thermo-electricity
and photo-electricity
is now under way in many
nniversities.
Benedict said the earth alone
was capable of supplying 10

at me and sniffed," he says.

coal, oil and natural gas.

Charged With Murder

Silas Johnson, 43, Tehema coun
ty farmer, tonight stood charged
with the murder of his cousin,
Robert Johnson, 49. in what
authorities described as an old
fashioned wester n-style gun
duel.
The complaint against Silas
was signed by District Attorney
Edmund Moor who returned
with the accused man from
Sparks, New, where he was ar
rested yesterday on a tip from
California authorities.
Moor said Silas claimed the
shooting was in self-defense. The
bullet-riddled body of Robert
was found in a dry gulch not far
from Silas' home, 13 miles west
of here.
