TORNADOES KILL 12 As snowstorms and floods lashed at tha northern plains, states In the South
west were hit by a series ot tornadoes that killed at least 12 persons and Injured 40. Three members of
the Tabor family died when their home was struck by the tornado as It stiff-armed Its way through
Clyde, Tex. They were found In a corner of their home where the ruins were piled the highest (ex

biggest letter "W" in the world,
the college emblem above West
stern State College of Colorado
here, is about to get a white
washing. The "W" on Tenderfoot moun
tain above Gunnison is 400 feet
across the top and each of the
four legs is 300 feet long and
16 feet wide. A person standing
at the top of the "W" cannot see
the bottom because of the steep
ness and curvature of the moun
tain. Hundreds of gallons of water
and some 2.500 pounds of lime
will be needed for the huge
whitewashing Job.

admiring her red-painted toe
nails. Now that she has reached
the tottering old age of five.
Muggie even gets treatments of
penicillin and, liver and iron
shots.
The pampered hen Is the pet
of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shu
maker. She is the last of a flock
which the county health depart
ment ordered the Shumakers to
dispose of.
Maggie won her owners' sym
pathies and freedom from a
neck-wringing when she began
to mourn the loss of her hus
band, a proud rooster named
Jiggs.
The Shumakers gave Maggie
the run of the house. She began
eating such unusual foods as
grapes and bananas. She beenme
fascinated with the music of Guy
Lombardo one day, roosting on
an overstuffed chair near the ra
dio while a disc Jockey appro
priately played Lombardo's re
cording of "Enjoy Yourself, It's
Later Than You Think."
Now she listens to the radio
often when soft music is being
nlaycd, Mrs. Shumakcr said, but
struts away when commentators
take over.
Maggie got the penicillin shots
when she caught pneumonia.
"The veterinarian said he had
never heard of giving penicillin
to a chicken, but we gave her
two shots and it killed the pneu
monia," Mrs. Shumaker explain
ed. "The liver and iron shots
were to build her up."
Mrs. Shumaker said Maggie
likes to have her nails polished
a bright red.
"She sits and admires them
all day," Mrs. Shumaker said.
