Dick Bartle Drives In
Two Runt With His Hit

Dick Bartle, former Medford
Nuggets player in the Far West
league, got one single out of
four tries Thursday night but
that one in the second inning
brought in two of five runs that
helped the Salem Senators in an
8 to 4 win.
The big first baseman for the
Western International league
club has been hitting the ball
hard in recent games with many
runs batted in credited to him
also.

Observers have predicted that
the fans looking on tomorrow
will see several records broken
as well as seeing boys who will
represent this district in the
state track meet at Corvallis
next week-end. Boys and relay
teams place first and second will
go to Corvallis.

Groundskeeper Jack Cum
mings says that the track will
be in the best condition it has
ever seen and that plus the fact
that some of the fastest high
school runners in Oregon will be
competing could mean new rec
ords. Schools expected to take part
in addition to the Black Tor
nado are Grants Pass, Klamath
Falls, Central Point. Illinois Val
ley. Eagle Point and Lakeview.
Spectators attending will en
ter only through the new or
east grandstand. Entrances on
the west side will be open to of
ficials and competitors only.
While only the first two in
each event will be eligible for
the state track meet, those fin
ishing third and fourth will be
alternates and could compete if
one or other of the first two can
not take part.
Prelims Scheduled
In all field events two throws
or jumps will be taken by each
school until four have been tak
en in the morning preliminaries.
In the afternoon finals the best
six in each event will take three
more throws or jumps.
Last year Medford place 11
men in nine events in the dis
trict meet and then went on to
win the state championship.
This year the Tornado and Klam
ath Falls are figured to be top
teams here with each placing
many boys.
Events to watch especially to
morrow for excitement include
high hurdles, shot put, discus
and the 880-yard relay.

Ball Results
Washington school wrapped
up their second baseball victory
of the local grade school season
and Roosevelt made its record
read one win and one loss when
the two won from Jackson and
Lincoln respectively yesterday.
The Washingtonians edged
Jackson 5 to 1 with Jackson be
ing shut out in hits by Hawley
and Sides for the Washington
team. Walks and errors scored
Jackson's lone run. Cooksey
hurled for Jackson at the Jack
son field and gave up two hits.
One run each in the first, sec
ond and third innings and two
in the fourth were made by
Washington while Jackson tal
lied its lone run in the fifth.
The other game of the day
played at Roosevelt's fieldd saw
the Roughriders defeat Lincoln
8 to 3.
Eagles Lose
To IV 4 to 2
Eagle Point, May 12 Eagle
Point high made it four victo
ries and four defeats in JDJ
league baseball games this year
when the Eagles dropped a 4 to 2
decision to Illinois Valley at Cave
Junction yesterday.
Doherty on the mound for the
Eagles allowed five hits while
the Eagle Point nine garnered
but two safeties. Dorienhoff
slammed out a two-bagger for
the Eagle Pointers.
Eagle Point is scheduled to
play at Grants Pass next Tues
day afternoon and against Ash
land at the Camp White field
next week Friday in Southern
Oregon conference tilts.

Members of the Medford city
tennis team have been working
out most every day this week
on the high school courts prepar
ing for the practice match with
Ashland's city team on the Lithia
city's courts Sunday.
Matches will start on the Sab
bath at 10 a. m. and will last
into early afternoon.
Ashland is said to be bolstered
with a strong group of players
and the competition between the
two city teams in singles and
doubles matches is expected to
be stiff with the final outcome
rated as a probable toss-up.

School Track
Gold Hill. My 12 The an
nual Jackson county erade
school track meet will be hold
Saturday, May 27, at the Gold
Hill field north of the city with
all grade schools outside Med
ford eligible to enter. Principal
Bob Sage of Gold Hill Grade
school announced here today.
This year the meet will be di
vided into two classes and B
with seventh and eighth grad
ers in class A and grades four,
five and six In grade B.
Lamport's Sporting Goods
store, Medford. is donating a
trophy to the school getting the
most points and ribbons will go
to the boys placing first, second
and third.
The track meet, onen to both
non-high school district grade
schools and others outside Med
ford. will start at 2 p.m. Whether
preliminaries will be necessary
will depend on how many enter.

Card Due on Monday
Medford boxing fans, who
proved last month that they will
support expensive cards featur
ing top-flight out-of-town talent,
will be offered another such pro
gram at the armory next Mon
day night when the Southern
Oregon Boxing club presents an
outstanding program.
Although the main eventers
are both Portland boys, they be
long to rival clubs and, with the
unofficial Oregon middleweight
chamoionshin at stake, a slam-
bang match is in prospect. Joel
Wilson, of the Ramblers cluo,
meets Bull Halsey, of the PAL
club, in the feature bout. Wil
son, the Oregon and Washing
ton champ, holds a split decision
over Halsey and is the only man
to have the popular Negro on
the deck in 58 fights. The win
ner will be in line for a match
with either Herb Carlson. na-
tlonal inter collegiate champ
ion, or with wes Echols, national
AAU tltleholdcr, here this summer.
Several local favorites will
have spots on the card. One of
the matches drawing consider
able attention is the semi-wind-
up between Bob Stumbo, Wolf
