Your Health and Its Care
B DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D.
Readers should address Inquiries tot Dr. William Brady,
US II Camino, Beverly Hills. Calif.
CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN WHEN YOU ARE WELL
How often should one have a
physical or medical examination
or check-up? This question turns
i2
up frequently
in the mail.
Generally, too,
the corres
pondent asks
just what the
exam ination
should in
clude. Some
times the cor
respond ent
even asks how
much it will
cost.
Here I'll try
to answer the
or. Brady first Question
oniy.
First, although I'm a doctor,
of sorts, I'm subject to the same
pathological mishaps as you are,
although not so likely to suffer
physical degeneration as you
are, because I know better than
you do how to stave off the man
ifestations of physical degenera
tiondecay and loss of teeth,
rhetimatiz, hardening of the
arteries. This is not a secret
which I keep to myself. Bless
your heart, no, I tell you all
about it in the booklet Tho 7
Koyo to Vile for which you
have only to send twenty-five
cents and stamped self-addressed
envelope.
On the other hand, because
I'm a doctor perhaps I am a bit
preiudiced about the periodic
health examination business.
That is, I may be inclined to
urge examinations which are
not really necessary or not
worth your while. But I try to
Fut myself in your place and,
assure you, I get no thanks or
credit or commission from any
one for checkups made upon my
recommendation. To the best of
my recollection no doctor has
ever acknowledged or thanked
me for referring an applicant for
a check-up. On the contrary I
have been chagrined more than
once to learn that a physician
or specialist to whom I have sent
inquirers has expressed a low
opinion of me and my column if
the patient casually mentioned
my name in the course of the
interview.
This I believe with all my
heart and soul. Every one old
enough to read and write should
visit his or her dentist at least
once a year, better every six
months, for examinations of the
the teeth and prophylaxis or
treatment of any trouble the
dentist, may discever.
Theoretically I suppose I
should recommend the same pro
gram in respect to general
health that is, that every one
should visit his or her physician
at least once a year for a physi
cal or health examination and
the proper advice or treatment
for any trouble the physician
may discover. In actual practice
I doubt if it works as well as
that. I mean to sav that there are
still too many physicians who
either will not or cannot give a
person a proper nealth examin
ation when that person has
"no,thing the matter" or no par
ticular complaint.
I am unable to dissociate my
own personal way of life from
the program I recommend for
you. I'm bound to confess that I
have never in my life deliber
ately sought a check-up or a
medical examination, except on
occasions when I applied for life
insurance or an appointment or
a commission.
Who am I, then, to say that
you poor geeks should spend
your good money for health ex
aminations every year, when I
have never seen fit to have such
examinations myself? Well,
again I say I'm a doctor and I'm
pretty contiaent I know more
than you do about how to post
pone cardio-vascular and other
degenedations. If my confidence
in my superior knowledge is
warranted it must be admitted
that I have less need for period
ic health tests than you do.
But my peculiar notions can
not minimize the value and im
portance of annual tests of a
specimen of urine for sugar, of
the eye-ground or Interior of
eyebayy for early arteriosclero
sis (physician can see the minute
arteries with the ophthalmo-
Radio
Dial Lights
By Johnny Ahem
Notes from our mail depart
ment: Somebody wants to know
why, every so often the fights
are heard after 8 p. m. on Fri
day . . . and the Fat Man is not.
Well, the only reason it happens
that way is because the fights
run over the period allotted
them, and the network cancels
the Fat Man program. I'm afraid
it's one of those things that we
have no control over . . . but, if
it will help, we miss the Fat
Man just as much as anybody
else when it doesn't come
through. Another item: a new
addition to our program lineup
will be the Sammy Kaye Sunday
Serenade, starting next Sunday
at 4:30 p. m. Thanks to some
one for a note on the subject.
Today at 6:45 p. m. there's a
special program of interest to all
residents of Medford and vi
cinity. The Medford water com
mission will present a program
from the KYJC studios, bringing
a vital question to attention of
the public.
If a certain DC-4 comes in
just a little bit lower one of
these days, you're apt to find
the 1230 spot on your dial just
a little bit silent. What a roar
two motors can make , . . and
four, of course, doubles it.
If you're one of the families
who get together for the Blondie
show on Sunday, better set your
program clock ahead. With a
new change in programming,
Blondie will be heard tonight
at 7:30 . . . with Dagwood, Alex
ander, Cookie, Daisy and the
entire Bumstead menage. Looks,
too, as if the "Case book of
Gregory Hood" will go into the
regular Bumstead spot on sun
day. Flying Saucers No
Trouble to Africa
Explorer Maintains
Chicago (U.R Go to the Af
rican bush country if you want
to get away from flying saucers,
a traveler in the "dark conti
nent" advises.
Anything like a flying saucer
"simply wouldn't concern" the
African native, said Explorer
Berry B. Brooks, who reported
he has traveled 24,000 miles in
the veldt country.
A native in the African bush
who saw something he thought
was a flying saucer would shrug
his shoulders, turn to the next
native and probably utter the
African equivalent of "so what,"
Brooks said.
"They'd conclude it was some
thing they didn't know anything
about maybe black magic and
they'd dismiss it. Why should
they care about something 'way
off in the sky?"
They're Happy
Brooks said the African na
tives could teach Americans a
lot about being happy, just by
not worrying unnecessarily.
He said he has "yet to see a
native worry much about any
thing, and they are the happiest
people 1 have ever seen."
"They don't worry about poli
tics because the big tribal offices
are handed down from father to
son. Women are no problem if
a man has enough cows, he al
ways can buy another wife. No
alarm clocks no clothing prob
lems they're completely care
free." Learns Calmness
Brooks, who is a large cotton
merchant in Memphis, Tenn.,
said his experience has made him
a calmer man. He's learned that
a lot of worrying can be elim
inated, if you take your own
problems one by one and don't
worry about anyone else s.
