Use of Dangerous
Oxylin Tablets
Washington, May 11 (U.PJ
The food and drug administra
tion today issued an emergency
warning that thousands oi poten
tially deadly uncoated oxylin
tablets containing dangerous
changed and boracic acid added,
been distributed throughout the
east and midwest by a Pennsyl
vania drug firm.
All hospitals, physicians, drug
gists and consumers in the area
were warned against use of the
tablets, which are being sold
across drug counters witnoui

Poisoning May Result
The government agency said
that the tablets contain "danger
ous amounts of boracic acid" and
that their use may "result'; in
serious poisoning." '
The agency said that after the
tablets had been on the market
four years the formula was
change and boracic acid added.

VA hospital yesterday, elected
officers for the year, and dis
cussed problems that confront
the organization In their . work
at the Roseburg VA hospital and
Camp White center, according to
Miss Charlotte Rogers, Red Cross
representative here.
The district embraces the fol
lowing counties: Benton, Doug
las, Coos, Curry, Jackson, Jo
sephine, Klamath, Lane, Linn,
Polk and Si-kiyou in California.
Serving for the new year as
chairman of the council will be
Mrs. W. R. Harper, Grants Pass.
Mrs. Maud Martin. Corvallis,
will be vice-chairman and Mrs.
John S. Day, Medford, will act
as secretary.

16,000 Beetles Brought to
Combat St. Johns Wort
L. G. Gentner, entomologist at
the southern Oregon experiment
station here, has completed the
liberation in Jackson and Jo
sephine counties of 16,000 beetles
to feed on St. John's-wort, also
known as Klamath weed or goat
weed, he said today.
He accompanied Dr. Chas. H.
Martin of the entomology depart
ment, Oregon State college, to
the area in Humboldt county,
California, where the beetles
were collected. Dr. Martin has
charge of the project of introduc
ing the beetles into Oregon and
had previously made arrange
ments with James K. Holloway
of the U. S. bureau of entomol
ogy and plant quarantine to ob
tain these insects. In Josephine
county Jens Svinth and Clifford
Jenkins of the county extension
service assisted in the selection
of fields.
Has Freed Area
Beetles liberated four years
ago in an area in Humboldt coun
ty very heavily infested with St.
John's-wort. have practically
eradicated the weed from an area
about seven miles long by three
miles wide, and grasses have be
come re-established in this pas
ture area. The ranch where the
beetles were collected had been
heavily infested with St.
John's-wort that the owner was
offered only $5 an acre for the
ranch. At present it is practically
free from the weed.
St. John s-wort has become a
very serious weed pest on uncul
tivated lands and pastures. When
it becomes established it crowds
out useful plants and stock will
not teed there. Mow tne Deeues
and their larvae eat the leaves
and tender growth, leaving only
the woody parts, thus starving
out the plants or weakening them
so that they no longer can com
pete with other vegetation.

The beetles have been Intro- i
duced from Australia and have
been studied experimentally in
California for about five years, ,
The adult beetles are bronze,
blue or green in color, about one
fourth inch long and about one
half as wide and are rather ro-1
bust. They emerge from the :
ground about this time of the
year, feed for a time, then dur
ing the summer they go through j
a period of aestivation or sum
mer dormancy.
With the fall rains they again .
become active, feed and lay eggs.
Most of the egg-laying, however, ;
occurs early in the spring. The ;
larvae feed until about the first !
of April when they go into the
soil to pupate, some time later !
changing to adults. This insect
can increase very rapidly, since j
each female is capable of laying j
about 5,000 eggs. The colonies j
which are now being established
will show little effect the first j
year, but if conditions are favor-1
able, large numbers of beetles
should be available for libera
tion in other fields by the sec-,
ond or third year. j
The beetles feed only on St.
John's-wort and will perish if
this is not available.
