Arturo Toscanini,
Orchestra in Portland
Portland, Ore., May 9 (U.R)
A special 14-car train carrying
Maestro Arturo Toscanini and
106 members of the NBC sym
phony orchestra pulled into Port
land today for one of Oregon's
top musical performances of the
year.
Toscanini, whose greatness
and personality are indelibly felt
in contemporary music, arrived
aboard a special car at the rear
of the train, complete with spe
cial, well-stocked larder, a per
sonal chef, dining room, living
room and lounge.
Hardly a downtown store was
without a portrait of the maestro
in its windows and the Benson
hotel prepared a special suite for
the 83-year-old conductor.
A large black sedan was hired
for his sole use while in Port
land, including a condition that
the chauffeur be a man about 45
years of age, who is not to speak
to the musical wizard unless
spoken to first.

Retail Merchants
Discuss Variety
Of City Problems
Some 75 retail merchants of
Medford discussed a variety of
mutual problems at a dinner
meeting at the Medford hotel
last night, held under the aus
pices of the Jackson County
Chamber of Commerce.
Subjects which were aired by
the merchants ranged through
support of the Sheriff's posse
Rogue River Roundup, publicity
for the opening of the Haw
thorne park swimming pool, a
screening committee to review
fund solicitations, publicizing
Medford as the southern Oregon
and northern California shop
ping center, tourist promotion,
the city license problem, and
generally improving retail trade
through cooperation and crea
tion of a modern, friendly at
mosphere. Tells Of Aid
Chet Hubbard, president of
the chamber, explained how that
organization is equipped to as
sist retail merchants in solving
their problems, and Robert
Agard, chairman of the retail
trade committee, also spoke
briefly.
Dick Kay, of the Sheriff's
posse, explained plans for an ex
panded Roundup this year, and
urged merchants to trim their
windows so that both the Round
up and the - merchants would
benefit. Tony Manno suggested
that the week of June 5 be de
signated as "roundup week,"
and that store employees wear
western garb.
Discusses Tourists
John Snider, chairman of the
chamber's tourist travel sub
committee, said that an import
ant factor in tourist promotion
would be education through the
schools, and he suggested that an
attractive emblem be designed
for stores to display.
Plans for the pool dedication
were discussed by Mrs. Dick
Paine, who said the ceremonies
are tentatively set for Sunday,
June 4. Advisability of having
a parade were discussed.
City Councilman Paul Selby
explained some of the back
ground of the pool project, and
stated that it is a facility of
which Medford can be proud.
The investment should be made
use of by keeping activities at
a high pitch, he said.
Hubbard outlined a plan for
control of solicitations, which he
said have gotten to a point where
merchants cannot handle them.
Some merchants reported six to
nine solicitations in one day. It
was suggested that the chamber
appoint a committee to act on
out-of-town solicitor appeals.

Given in Contest
Few schools or musical en

choir was rated as excellent.
In Class A band competition,
no superior ratings were given.
Washington of Portland, Salem,
Klamath Falls and Benson of
Portland all were rated excel

gon City and Grants Pass were
called good.
Same for Orchestras
The same was true In Class A
orchestra judsing, Mirick said.

quartet, superior; brass sextet
excellent: trombone quartet
