Many Japanese blame the gov
ernment, and Indirectly the oc
cupation, for the rigid enforce
ment of a high tax rate, wage
freezing, and the "tight money"
situation which are said to
cause most of the "economic"
suicides.
While admitting that there Is
acute distress in some regions of
Japan, occupation economists
who are enforcing the "auster
ity" program laid down by the
Detroit banker, Joseph In.
uodge, claim it has halted inna
tion, balanced the budget, sta
bilized the nation's economy and
lowered the cost of living.
Unlike the traditional forms
of hara kiri, in which the victim
plunges a razor-sharp knife Into
his abdomen, or together with
his sweetheart leaps into a vol

Man in Auto Defies
Lightning Discharge
Sunnyvale, Cal. (U.R) A man
In a gray tweed suit sat calmly
in a car while a 2.40U.000-volt
discharge of lightning struck
the roof.
He stopped out unscathed.
The lightning was man-made,
nart of a demonstration by West
inghouse engineers. The bolt
came from a 25-foot high gener
ator which resembles a modern
diving pliitform.
Westinghouse is using the gen
erator to test transformers. En
gineers figure if the transform
ers can stand up under the man-,
made lightning bolt, they should
be able to stand any kind nature
displays.
Joseph H. Cox, engineer in
charge, said the safest place to
dc n an electrical storm strikes
is in an all-steel shell, and a "car
is made to order."
Other antics at the demontra-
tlnn included bending a 12-foot
lightning bolt into a W. The
engineers also set fire to a barn,
blew the top off a steeple, and
split a two by four board. All
except the board were minia
tures. '
