Sociologist Speaks
At Annual Fest ival
Of Extension Units
"People only need to under
stand one another," said Miss
Edith Freeman, rural sociologist
when she spoke on "Life's Give
and Take" at the annual Home
makers' Festival of Jackson
county extension units held last
Wednesday in Central Point.
Several hundred members and
guests attended.
Miss Freeman declared that
the need in this country today
is for more love and understand
ing, not only in the home but
in all walks of life, and said
"let s not always think of money
and trouble, but only of love
and appreciation."
The speaker talked of those
who are "selfishly unselfish,"
and of those who are
"unselfishly s e 1 f 1 s h." Tell
ing o the former, she said
these were the people who can
never relinquish the role of the
giver. Miss Freeman said many
people tend to make giving en
tirely commercial, a matter of
gifts purchased and presented
with "nothina of the giver" in
cluded in the gesture. At this
time she also spoke of the re
lationships between parents ana
children and said "look at their
deeds, but only in love and not
in self glorification.
She said America does have
a strong sense of "class" in spite
of protestations of democracy
and said these were evidenced
in race, social position and re
ligion. Miss Freeman declared
"we just don't know how other
people live, or understand them;
instead we lean on stereotyped
generalizations that often aren't
true."
Miss Freeman said the educa
tion of the people in this country
tends to be contradictory m mai
parents attempt to train their
children to do everything well
and on the other hand keep
belittling them for fear they
will get a swelled head."
"We don t understand even
our own families, ftiiss rree-
man declared and said too many
people "build a little fence
around themselves" and are
afraid to express their love and
affection for tear tney win De
hurt.
The sDeaker said individuals
and groups could work to over
come this lack of understanding
by inter-change of ideas, through
discussion, by learning how to
listen to other people and their
problems and by "working ana
playing together."
