Church Reports Boom In Rural Districts
Philadelphia (U.PJ It isn't so
that rural congregations are de
clining and that some country
pastors still lead a "horse and
buggy days" existence, at least
not in the United Lutheran
church in America.
According to a church survey,
its rural membership is up 73 per
cent and more than 9 per cent
of the country ministers enjoy
electricity and most of the other
facilities of city dwelling pastors.
Based on a survey taken in
I, 300 rural congregations, the
figures also showed that most of
the country pastors serve more
than a congregation. On the aver
age, each of the church's rural
ministers drives his automobile
II, 000 miles a year, covering a
territory of about 123 square
miles.
More than half have a rural

(Jake) Long combined a pair of
millstones that came by ox cart
across the mountains from Ken
tucky more than 150 years ago
with a 1933 Dodge and went into
business.
Long's ancient mill, set up in
a corner of his plumbing shop
just off DeGraff's main street,
is engaged in custom grinding
for the folks who live in the
area.
"Everybody thinks the corn
and wheat they grow is the best,
you know," Long explained.
"They get a kick out of eating
corn cakes, bread and corn muf
fins made from their own corn."
Long got the huge stones at an
auction in 1944. The upper, or
turning stone, is 42 inches in di
ameter and weighs ,1,250 pounds'.
The burr stone on the bottom
weighs close to 1,000 pounds.

caterpillars build their own high
ways, each taking its turn in lay
ing down a roadway as fine as
gossamer, a scientist reports.
A gray web or tent caterpillar
nest in the crotch of a tree in
spring contains as many as 300
little black wriggling worms, ac
cording to Dr. S. W. Bromley,
entomologist of the Bartlett Tree
Research Laboratories.
"When they become hungry,"
he said, "one will emerge and
scoot out to the end of a limb,
weaving a silken strand as it
goes. The other worms will fol
low along this highway, Indian
file.
"After feasting on tender new
leaves, the caterpillars return to
their web, backtracking along
the silken highway."
