Ashland took the lead In the
first event the 660-yard run
by winning a first and a third
but the Tornado captured first
and second in the next event
the 70-yard high hurdles and

Hollywood Backs
Club for TV Fans
Hollywood, Apr. 27 (U.R)
Hollywood of the Pacific Coast
league and station KLAC-TV
have organized , a television
radio fan club in an all-out war
on lagging attendance at the
tars' home games.
Hollywood President Victor
Ford Collins announced last
night that the new club will be
given a 30-day trial. If It is not
successful, the Pacific Coast
baseball league champions may
cancel their T-V contract with
KLAC.
Hollywood officials believe
television is mainly responsible
for the drop in attendance.

Medford high baseball team
will attempt to make it two wins
in a row over Southern Oregon
league competition wnen it
takes on Grants Pass high Fri
day at 3 p.m. on the local school
field. It will be the first 1950
baseball game between the two
high schools.
Last Tuesday afternoon the
Black Tornado diamond players
set back Eagle Point high in a
conference tilt 12 to 2.
Coach Alex McDonald did not
announce who would hurl to
morrow for the local club but
indications were that it would
be either Jack Turk or Derald
Wooten.
With a non-conference double
header coming up at Myrtle
Creek Saturday afternoon, the
local club will need Its pitching
staff in top shape. Saturdays
final game will be the fourth for
Medford this week.

War veterans wis disabilities of
25 per cent or more may buy
Oregon fishing or hunting li
censes for 50 cents, the depart
ment of veterans' affairs was
advised today.
Veterans may buy a combina
tion fishing-hunting license for
one dollar.
Application is made through
the game commission headquar
ters in Portland. Forms are avail
able from the commission or
from county veterans' service
omcers, county clerks and the
stale veterans' department in Sa
lem or in Portland.
Those who received the spe
cial licenses last year need only
submit their old licenses as evi
dence, the game commission
said.
New applicants must first ob
tain a disability statement from
the veterans administration re
gional office and Portland, then
submit a witness' notarized state
ment as to residence, along with
the evidence of disability.

Baseball Friday
County class B high school
baseball scheduled Friday after
noon will send Phoenix to Jack
sonville. Talent to Prospect and
Rogue River to Butte Falls, ac
cording to the original schedule
sent out by the league.
"Play ball" will be called at
3 p.m. at all three towns with
Phoenix high out to keep its un
defeated record and league lead
ership intact against a dangerous
foe. St. Mary's (Medford) draws

Oregon Golf
Open Champ

Portland golf professional Har
old West won the 1950 Oregon
open golf tournament here yes
terday with a tnree under par
285 for 72 holes.
West took an early lead In the
open and never did fall behind
as he won his second state
championship in three years. He
was trailed in second place by
Ed "Porky" Oliver of Seattle
who got a one under par 287.
Congdon Places Third
' Chuck Congdon of Tacoma fin
ished third with a par 288. All
the remaining 64 players trail
ed by a number of strokes be
hind the three leaders.
Top amateur in the open was
fifth place Bob Duden of East
moreland in Portland with a
card of 293. Emery Zimmerman
of Portland took fourth with
292.
The win gave West $450 prize
money for his efforts, Oliver got
$300, and congdon Slu.
Rogues Gain
New Players
Names of three of the four
youths who are scheduled to
join the Medford Rogues in Cal
ifornia or have done so, were
released by Business Manager
Mel Carpenter today.
Maro Guglielmo, a veteran
catcher, and Donald Fitzpatrick,
a rookie first baseman that is
said to have a lot of talent, join
ed the local Far West league club
at Pittsburg, Cal., last night. An
experienced outfielder, William
Adams, will join it here on
May 2.
A veteran pitcher is scheduled
to ioin the Rogues in about a
week but his name was not
released.
All four will come from El
Centro, Cal., of the class C Sun
set league.
Carpenter said that negotia
tions are still underway for
more playing talent with the
hope particularly to pick up at
least one more experienced
pitcher to help out.
Oregon State Trackmen
Host WSC on Saturday
Eugene, Apr. 27 Track and
field performances in the north
ern division improved at the end
of the second week of competi
tion. Six new seasonal records
were posted and another tied as
Oregon thumped Washington
State and Oregon State defeated
Idnho.
Oregon's victory over the
Cougars left the 1950 dual meet
championship race with only the
Ducks and Washington still un
defeated. This Saturday the Huskies
meet Idaho at Seattle and Wash
ington State is at home for Ore
gon State. Oregon will have a
small squad at the Drake Relays
and Montana is idle.

last night, but the 10 round
trippers the players swatted out
didn't always prove to be the
winning blows.
This was especially true at
Sacramento, where the Solons
went into the sixth inning a 2-0
loser.
Ralph Hodgins eyed Portland
Pitcher Red Lynn, hit the pitch
squarely and sailed the ball over
the wall for two runs. Then
Herm Reich doubled home the
other two runs for a four-run
inning.
That put the Solons comfort
ably in the lead, but the Beavers
weren't through. They rallied in
the top of the ninth to win the
game, 6 to 5.

Mountain Lakes Open
For Fishing Reported
The following is a summary of
trout openings for Cascade lakes
within national forest bound
aries: Lakes within' the Willamette
and Mount Hood national forests
except those in Wasco and Jef
ferson counties open to fishing on
June 1. Wasco and Jeffrson
county lakes in the Mount Hood
national forest including Badger,
Clear. Frog, Green and Olallie
open May 1.
Rock Creek reservoir near
Wamic will also open May 1.
Cascade lakes located in the
Deschutes. Umpqua and Rogue
River national forests open May
1 with the exception of several
lakes. Major exceptions are Paul
ina, East and Diamond lake,
which will open June 1.
South Twin lake in the Des
chutes national forest opens June
15. Fish, Buckeye. Cliff and
Twin lakes in the Umpqua na
tional forest open June 1.
Regardless of whether the
trout openings are early or late,
it is well to remember that many
of the mountain lakes will be in
accessible until the middle of
June because of excessive snow
fall this past winter.
Forest road openings should
be chu'eked before scheduling
fishing trips to any of the high
lakes this spring.

Wallick-Grable Mix
To Be Fan Pleaser
A match which is expected to
fill the armory wrestling arena
to tne hilt is on tap tonight be
tween Leo Wallick, the Chicago
pile driver, and Lee Grable,
handsome Los Angeles matman.
It is a renewal of their bitter
feud, started about three months
ago when Wallick's roughhouse
maneuvers put Grable on
crutches for six weeks, and con
tinued here last week with Gra
ble winning on a foul after an
out-of-the-ring skirmish.
The muscle manglers have a
natural dislike for each other
and don't mind attempting to
dent the other's features. Grable
would rather do his work legiti
mately but Wallick will take his
any way or any time opportuni
ty provides.
At any rate, it should be a
bang-up battle which should
give the customers plenty to
howl about.
Pete Belcastro, who asked for
a shot at Wallick but was put
off, intends to make quick work
of Ted Bell in the semi-windup.
Pete still wants to see if Wallick
is good enough to crack the Bel
castro noggin in a pile driver
and will probably unleash a
vicious attack on the Brooklyn
ite in an attempt to force Wal
lick into the ring with him.
Buck Davidson, who always
puts on a good show, will tackle
George Strickland in the 8:30
p.m. opener.
Armory doors will open at
7:30 p.m. and Promoter Mack
Lillard said that while a large
crowd is in prospect, choice
seats will be offered for early
comers.
Ducks 440-Relay
Team to 'Drakes'

University of Oregon's fast 440
yard relay team left here last
night by air for Des Moines, la.,
where the Webfoots will enter
the Drake relays this week-end.
The team is composed of Bill
Fell, Dave Henthorne, Al Bullier
and Jack Smith. Fell and Hen
thorne also will enter the 100
yard dash.
George Rasmussen, northern
division pole-vault champion and
co-holder of the Pacific coast
conference title, planned to fly
today to Salt Lake City to enter
the Utah relays.

college basketball player, has
been appointed head basketball
coach at Astoria high school,
Supt. James Burgess announced
today.
Paldanius, who played three
years for Slats Gill's Beavers, is
an Astoria high graduate.
He succeeds Alex Pedersen,
who resigned to return to col
lege for graduate work.
