Communist China
Good Market for

China under the communists Is
providing a better cash-paying
market for American cotton than
she did under the nationalist gov
ernment. Government reports show that
"communist China" has been
buying only slightly less Amer
ican cotton this marketing year
than nationalist China purchased
in the previous one.
Paying Full Prica
Furthermore, the communists
are paying the full price for all
of it. Almost all cotton shipped
to "nationalist China" during the
orevious season was paid for by
the American taxpayer through
foreign aid programs, according
to agriculture figures.
Among cash-paying nations, of
ficials said, communist China
and communist-ruled Czechoslo
vakia now rank second and third,
respectively, in total purchases
of American cotton this market
ing season. Canada is first.
No Foreign Aid
Officials define a "cash pay
ing" country as one that receives
no foreign aid funds for purchase
of American cotton. At present,
more than BO per cent of all U. S.
cotton exports now totaling
better than 5 million bales a year
is being paid for with foreign
aid funds.
A heavy spurt in buying of
American cotton by Chinese com
munists occurred in February.
During that month China and
Hong Kong imported as much
U. S, cotton as they took during
all of the previous six months.
This boosted their take for the
scven-manlh period to 115,000
bales.

cocktail habit

which are far
more demoral
izing to young
people than
the saloons and
barrooms o f
yesteryear.

Either tea or coffee gives one
a real lift when one is weary or
depressed by business or domes
tic cares or just tired or fatigued
by hours of work. Unlike the
numbing or deadening effect of
alcohol on thought and the high
er senses, the effect of tea or
coffee is genuine stimulation,
and it is not followed by any ap
preciable letdown or unpleasant
after-effect as the brief. Inane
euphoria of alcoholism is.
' Some persons like tea or cof
fee without sugar or milk or
cream. Others have to sweeten
theirs. If the extra sugar used to
sweeten tea or coffee (30 calories
in the teaspoonful or small lump)
seems undesirable in the every
day diet one may get the sweet
ening effect of a spoonful of
sugar from a quarter-grain sac
charin tablet, which has no
caloric value. Thus a cup of
clear tea or coffee, sweetened if
desired, with a tablet or two of
saccharin, gives real refresh
men and enjoyment without al
tering the caloric intake at all.
It is now well established by
careful experimental investiga
tion and by long years of ex
perience that this chemical, ben
zosulfinide or saccharin, used as
a sweetener in the amount of
less than five grains a day, is
harmless to health.
People who are inclined to put
on superfluous flesh or who
have already achieved equtorial
expansion, should try to get it
through their fat should under
stand that it Is not the meat and
other protein items, not the fat
or the rich gravies, but the car
bohydrate (starches and sugars)
In the everyday diet that is main
ly responsible for obesity that
is, so far as food or diet is con
cerned. Not the carbohydrate natural
ly present In the cereals or grain6
and in such vegetables as pota
toes, beets and beans. If our
dailv diet contained only such
carbohydrate items few of us
would eet that way. We owe
most of our slacker flesh to, our
enormous consumption of re
fined carbohydrate, particularly
refined white sugar ana rennea
white flour.
' These refined carbohydrate
foods and the many delectable
victuals and beverages in which
they are ingredients, are so easy
to eat or drink even when we
are not hungry, so cheap, so
readily available everywhere
any upon all occasions, that it is
nearly as difficult to avoid over
Inrtiileenina in them as it is to
avoid indulging in alcohol.

bohydrate is the same as another
in this respect, be it laundry
starch, cornstarch, candy, sugar

dates, or the glucose or dxetrose
manufactured from corn syrup.
All of these carbohydrates
have the same caloric value, the
same nutritive value, the same
fattening effect if you take more
than you need.
