Connie Mack, acclaimed at 87 as
the- "greatest figure in American
sports," received the accolades
of the nation and the world to
day in the celebration of his
golden anniversary as manager

The Brand old man of base
ball, who "changed my mind
about retiring" during the past
few weeks, will receive a scroll
bearing the signatures of more
than 1,000,000 persons in cere
monies before the Athletics meet
the Boston Red Sox in the first
home game of Mack's 50th man
agerial season.

included those of President Tru
man, Vice President Alvin Bark-
ley, all members of the pres
ident's cabinet, governors of all
the states, every major figure in
baseball and fans from 15 coun

advantage today in their best-out-of-seven
playoff series with
New Westminster for the Pacific
Coast Hockey league title.
The Monarchs skated to a 4
to 2 victory in the third game
of the series last night with sec
ond stringer Eric Pogue pacing
a blistering attack. Pogue turned
the hat trick scoring in each of
the three periods.

Girl ushers at last season's Far
West league games here will be
in charge of the booth and not
only will sell opening day tick
ets but also reserved seats and
general admission for all
Rogues' home games in addition
to memberships in the Booster
club.
Junior High Band
The parade on opening day
will have the Junior high school
band taking part plus the Kilty
band from Ashland, the commit
tee in charge reported.
Gov. Douglas McKay and Sec
retary of State Earl T. Newbry
are being invited to take part in
officially opening the local seas
on as is Medford Mayor Diamond
Flynn and other dignitaries of
the city.
The Rogues squad together
with Booster club members, of
ficials of Rogue Valley Baseball,
Inc., invited guests and their
wives will be feted at a dinner
Monday evening, May 1, at a
place to be announced. The
Booster club Is sponsoring the
dinner.
?rizes Offered
While no campaign has been
conducted by the Boosters to get
prizes for opening day, several
local businessmen have volun
teered cash and merchandise
awards for "firsts." Others who
might be interested in giving
such awards may contact Presi
dent Les Stamper.
Floats are being sought to take
part in the opening day parade
scheduled for about 4 p.m. Tues
day, May 2. Firms who wish to
enter may contact Ken Hamner
at the Holland hotel, Stamper or
Sports Editor Hank Green at the
Mail Tribune.

Stock car races will be held
Sunday afternoon, May 7, at the
half mile dirt track on Barnett
road east of Radio Station KYJC
with about 30 drivers entered, it
was announced today by Walter
Medley and Al Gilhousen, pro
moters. A qualifying series of races
will be held that morning and
the first of four preliminary
races will start at 1 p.m. that
day. Six cars of 1936 vintage or
older will take part in each of
the four races and already at
least six have sent in their en
tries. The last race of the day will
see the top two cars in the quali
fying races plus the winner of
each of the four afternoon races
competing for top honors.
The promoters said they
planned stock car races at the
local track each Sunday until
Labor day.

schools collide in dual track
meets.
Powerful USC meets under

meet which will put on display

champions.
Best bet for a new record in
the CAL-USC festivities may be
big Sim Iness, the Trojan discus
thrower. Iness tossed the platter
177 feet, four inches this spring
a record surpassed by only
five men in history.
Oregon's Webfoots, under
Coach Bill Bowerman, have a
powerful, well-balanced squad.
They have three fine pole vault
ers in George Rasmussen (14
feet), Don Pickens (13 feet) and
Lloyd Hickock (12 feet, 8 inches(
and an outstanding sprinter in
Dave Hcnthorne. He covered the
century in 9.7 against Idaho.
Rainbow Trout Stripped

State game'eommission crews to
day were busy stripping eggs
from spawning rainbow trout at
tour Hatcheries.
A yield of 1,530,000 rainbow
eggs was taken from the McKen
zie river hatchery with 250.000
eggs taken from trout at the
Spencer creek hatchery. Further
egg supplies will be gathered at
East and Paulina lakes and Dia
mond lake stations.
