Lack of Box Cars
Faced by Farmers
In Wheat Regions
Chicago, Apr. 20 (U.fi De
spite a shorter crop, the nation's
farmers again this year won't
have enough box cars to move
their wheat as fast as they want
to, a representative of the Asso
ciation of American Railroads
said today.
Ralph E. Clark, manager of
the AAR's "closed car section,"
said there was no immediate so
lution to the farmers' problems,
he said it was the price they
had to pay for progress.
Combines, he said, have
shaved the harvest period down
to about 30 days. It used to be
three or four months, he said.
The longer harvest enabled the
railroads to get the grain into
storage before it began piling
up on the farms.
Must Move 1949 Crop
Clark explained that the rail
roads this season have a "double-barreled"
job. In addition to
moving the new winter crop of
an estimated 763 million bushels,
he said the railroads first must
move grain held in storage from
last year's crop. Much of it is on
government loans that expire
April 30.
Despite addition of 31 million
bushels in storage space at pub
lic terminal elevators, the total
space available is 108 million
bushels less than last year, he
said.
He said grainmen currently
are attempting to find emergen
cy storage facilities, such as air
plane hangars or any place to
get the wheat under cover.

No Traffic Signals
Needed in Astoria
Astoria, Ore., Apr. 20 4U.P1
Oregon State Highway Engineer
R. H. Baldock, in a preliminary
traffic-survey report, today said
Astoria needs neither traffic sig
nal lights nor a one-way grid
system to control its downtown
traffic.
The report listed one method
of lessening traffic hazards as
better law observance by drivers
and pedestrians. Baldock said
Astoria's traffic problem did not
call for signals or one-way
streets. He said present traffic
volume could increase about 50
per cent before acute conges
tion would develop.
