Astoria, Ore., Apr. 20 (U.R
Engineers today fought to pre
vent a second earth slide from
rolling down Coxcomb hill and
adding to the havoc that has de
stroyed or threatened 23 homes.
Using a horizontal boring ma
chine, city engineers began drill
ing into the soft topsoil in an
effort to drain off excess mois
ture and stop further damage to
the skidding landscape.
The main slide, about 350
yards long and 100 yards wide,
hit one of the most exclusive res
idential areas overlooking this
city of 16.000.
The slide was moving about
nine feet per day.
Chimney Crumbled
"Our house was one of the
first ten to be moved," said 15-year-old
Terry Kuske. "Once it
started, it went fast. Then it
stopped and we moved back in
again. But right away we heard
loud snaps of cement and plas
ter, going off like gunfire. The
water pipe broke and the fur
nace tipped half over. Our chim
ney crumbled inside.
"We lost our picnic tables and
barbecue pit when another house
fell on them. We've been walk
ing around in a daze since the
house went. We'd like to live
there again, but there's no
chance of that."
Dr. G. H. Thomas, chiroprac
tor, said he would sell his $15,
000 home for $4,000 cash.
Francis Robinson's house al
ready has been moved to safer
ground.
"Our backyard began drop
ping off, little by little. Soon the
earth under our house disap
peared and the kitchen began to
sag," said Robinson.
Everyone Confused
"Everyone's confused about
this. It was heartbreaking to see
the men in the neighborhood
calling their home 'Gibraltars'
and then have to move when
their time came."
"Our collie dog knew some
thing was up when our house be
gan to settle. He would shake all
over, and his teeth would chat
ter." Mrs. E. E. Rorabaugh said
that the only things left on her
property were a smashed $1,800
garage, crushed rabbit hutches
and a tangled clothes line.
"We had to kill the rabbits
when the house started to move,"
she said.
Mrs. Lawrence Jackson said
she "shook like a leaf" when the
Oscar Abrahamson house fell
within 10 feet of her backyard
while she was digging up flow
er bulbs in anticipation of her
own evacuation.
The swampy land upon which
much of Washington, D. C. is
built makes tunnel or subway
construction almost impracticable.
