    Raiders Lose '
Two Games to
Chico State
Central Point, Apr. 15 Chico
State college captured both ends
of a Far Western conference
baseball doubleheader here Sat
urday alternoon by defeating
Southern Oregon college 9 to 6
in the second game after win
ning the opener 7 to 3.
The Raiders rapped out 11
hits to six for Chico in the sec
ond game but four errors hurt.
The visitors from California
pushed over six runs in a big
fourth inning for more than
enough to win the game. Don
Campbell tripled for SOC in the
first inning.
A costly error by the Raiders
in the fifth inning of the first
game gave Chico the initiative
to punch out a victory. Two men
were out when a SOC infielder
threw wild to first on an easy
grounder. Lutz, Taylor, Gray
and Farthing rapped out hits
for SOC.
Martindale hurled for the
Raiders coached by Ted Schopf
i nthe second game and Johnnie
Gray and Pinkham did the SOC
pitching chores in the opener.
Farthing was catcher for both.
Talent High
Winner, 5-0
St. Mary's high baseball team
opened its county class B con
ference schedule Friday after
Lnoon by dropping a 5 to 0 deci
sion to Talent on the Bulldogs'
field.
Zumwalt on the mound for
Talent limited the Crusaders to
five scattered hits, struck out 12
opponents and walked but one.
- Driscoll. pitching for St. Mary's,
allowed seven hits and failed to
either strike out an opponent or
walk one.
Each team made three errors.
Sakraida lashed out a double in
the seventh and Davis of Talent
stole home in the sixth for high
lights of the game.
Jerrv Montgomery, veteran
pitcher for Talent, was unable
to play because ot Deing in wun
mumps.

Pointers Losers

tral Point high baseball squad to
day looked forward to playing
its rivals from Eagle Point high
at Eagle Point Tuesday afternoon
with the hope that the Pointers
would get into the winning col
umn. Last Friday afternoon on the
C. P. field the boys coached by
Clarence Mellbye dropped an 8
to 5 decision to Illinois Valley in
a Southern Oregon and JDJ con
ference tilt at Central Point. The
visitors took a first inning lead
and never were headed after
that .
Bigham, Hedgpeth and Traut
man toiled on the mound for the
Pointers with the latter showing
best results in the final four in
nings of the seven-frame affair.
The Pointers scored one run in
the second and four in the fourth
while Illinois Valley coached
by Wes Peters of SOC(athletic
fame, tallied one in the 'first in
ning, four in the second and three
in the third stanza.
Oregon U. Baseballers
Lose Wash State, 9-5

Washington State college success
fully opened its defense of its
northern division baseball crown
here Friday by blasting out a
win over the University of Ore
gon. The Webfoots were snowed
under by the superior hitting
power of the Cougars. WSC
slammed 16 hits, including five
for extra bases.
Crosby and Hope
On KYJC Monday
Bine Crosbv and Bob HoDe
team up in a special radio salute
to the start of the new baseball
season. Titled "Welcome Back
Baseball," the half-hour program
will be heard at 5:30 p.m. over
KYJC and the American Broad
casting company Monday.
A sure-fire comedy team, Hope
and Crosby are also allied in
baseball interests. Hope is a man
behind the scenes of the Cleve
land Indians and Crosby owns
shares in the Pittsburgh Pirates
Dorothy Lamour and the four
Crosby children will also be
heard on the show.

Prospect high's diamond crew
pushed its way into the winning
column Friday afternoon by de
feating Rogue River high's base
ball team 5 to 3 on the Chief
tains' field.
Lenderman on the mound for
Prospect struck out 12 oppo
nents, walked none and allowed
three hits, all singles. Sowles
hurled for Rogue River and
struck out four, walked one and
gave up eight hits. Prospect made
five errors and Rogue River four.
Prospect tallied two runs in
the first, one in the fourth and
two in the seventh while the
Chieftains pushed over one in
the third and two in the seventh.
Burrill rapped out two hits in
three trips and Lenderman got
a double to pace Prospect. Glen
Depuy. Reid and Smelling were
credited with Rogue River's
three hits, all singles.
Phoenix Tops

Poole for Butte Falls rapped
out two hits in three trips to
lead both teams in batting and
one of these was a triple. Furry
of Phoenix got a double and
Moore a triple for Butte Falls
for other extra base hits.
Hutton and Furry hurled for
the winners with Hutton having
to leave in the third inning for
the seven-frame game after be
ing hit on the arm. Moore pitched
for Butte Falls.

Fish Season
Opens Coast
Portland, Ore., Apr. 15 (U.R)
In rainy weather, Oregon trout
fishermen set out today to test
the game commission's predic
tion that fishing will be good
this spring.
The state's legal trout season
opened on coastal lakes and
streams with the exception of
the upper Rogue and upper Ump
qua river systems.
The season also started on
streams flowing into the Colum
bia river between its mouth and
the east boundary of Hood Riv
er county and into Willamette
valley streams except the North
Santiam system and streams in
Linn and Lane counties.
Opening date for the remain
der of the state is May 1.
During the past year'the game
commission has released 2,200,
000 yearling steelhead, cutthroat
and rainbow trout in streams
throughout the state, and plant
ing will continue throughout
April.
Trapshoot Dated Today
Medford Club Grounds
Medford Gun club will con
duct a registered trapshoot at its
grounds west of the Crater Lake
highway at Four Corners today
starting at 10:30 a.m.
Events will include firing at
100 16-yard targets. 50 handicap
targets and 25 pair of doubles.
Prizes will be awarded winners
in all the events and class option
als will be available, officers
said Saturday.
GRADE SCHOOL TRACK
Track teams from Roosevelt
and Jackson and Roosevelt grade
schools will compete in a dual
track meet Monday starting
about 4:15 p.m. on the high
school field. Last week Monday
afternoon Jackson school edged
Lincoln school.

while post entries will be al
lowed today for an extra fee.
Gold medals will go to the
winner, silver to second and
bronze to third in matches 1, 2,
3, 4, 5 and 6. Silver medal to
first, bronze to second in expert,
sharpshooter, marksman and
tyro classes if four or more are
entered in the class.
First place only if fewer than
four are in the class and if there
is only one entry he automat
ically will be moved into the
next higher class.
Match 7 Medals
In match 7 four bronze med
als will go to the winning team
and the first of the three legs
on the Bolton trophy. The team
match is unclassified and the
team will be made up on the
point system as no expert and
master shooters are in this lo
cality. Matches include No. 1, 20
shots slow fire; match 2, 20
shots timed fire; match 3, 20
shots rapid fire: match 4, 20
shots slow fire, match 5, 10
shots slow. 10 timed. 10 rapid:
match 6, aggregate of matches
1, 2, 3, 4 and 5; match 7, na
tional course team match.
