Voyage Will Set
Seafaring History

rived here today en route to
Halifax, N.S., on a voyage that
will write a new page in seafar
ing history.
When she arrives at her east
ern destination, the little white
vessel will be the first ship in
history to have circumnavigated
the North American continent.
Passage Negotiated
In 1944, the St. Roch negotiat
ed the northwest passage, from
Halifax to Vancouver, B.C., for
duty as supply ship to the moun
ties western Arctic outposts.
Now that airplanes have taken
over her task, she is on her way
back to Halifax via the Panama
canal to assume similiar duty on
the eastern side of the continent.
When she arrives she will have
completely circled North Ameri
ca by sea.
Set. Frederick Farrar, third
mate of the St. Roch, will share
the little ship's triumph as the
only member of the crew to
make the full continent-girdling
voyage.
Solid Timber Hull
The St. Roch is only 104 feet
three inches long and displaces
323 tons. Her hull is solid timber
up to 21 inches thick to shrug
off the weignt ot Arctic ice.
The vessel, commanded by In
spector K. M. Hall, was wel
comed by a delegation from the
San Francisco Canadian consu
late, including Consul-General
Harry Scott and Consul Norman
Senior.
Her 14 man crew will visit San
Francisco 48 hours before re
suming her voyage.
Lot of Farmers Said
To Grow Worse Later
Washington, Apr. 14 (U.R)
Farmers have been faring a lit
tle better so far this year than
the agriculture department pre
dicted. But officials said their
lot will worsen later.
In a report on farm income,
the department estimated today
that cash receipts from sale of
farm products during January
April will total $7,300,000,000.
That's a drop of five per cent
from the same period last year.
Earlier the department predict
ed that 1950 would bring a 10
per cent cut in farmers' cash
receipts from marketings.
Officials said the department
still stands on that forecast.
They said a relatively small por
tion of farm products is market
ed during the early part of the
year. Total receipts probably
will begin lagging further be
hind the 1949 level later in the
year . when, marketings, are
heaviest, they said.

The annual summertime ques
tion "What time is it in this
town?" will become monotonous
ly common in the Pacific north
west beginning April. 30.
The daylight savings time is
sue has been settled In most
cities but the argument still
rages in others. So far, most
cities west of the Cascades have
decided to set their clocks ahead
one hour, while those east of
the mountains, particularly in
Washington, are ignoring fast
time.
Confusion in Yakima
In some cases, clocks a few
miles apart will disagree by one
hour. Yakima may become
Washington's confusion center as
it was last year, when clocks in
the county courthouse ware set
according to what each depart
ment had decided, while the
rest of the city was on daylight
time and Yakima valley residents
stucK with standard time.
On April 30, clocks will be
set ahead one hour in Seattle,
Tacoma, Olymnia. Bremerton,
Everett, Aberdeen, Hoquiam,
Cosmopolis, Kelso, Longview,
Vancouver, Woodland. Centraua
and Chehalis in Washington.
All except the latter two cities
will return to standard time on
September 24.
But in the same area, Port An
geles, Bellingham and Mount
Vernon will stay on standard
time, as will all rural communi
ties in Lewis county, despite the
fact that Chehalis and Centralia
have voted to adopt fast time.
These two cities will return to
standard time nearly three weeks
early, however September 5.
Port Orford Holds Out
In Oregon, only Port Orford
in the southwestern part of the
state and Madras in 'the central
section will definitely stick to
standard time. Pendleton. Baker
and La Grande are undecided.
All other major Oregon cities
are going DST, including Port
land and Eugene. Other Oregon
cities committed to daylight sav
ing time include Corvallis, Med
ford, Klamath Falls, Roseburg,
The Dalles, Oregon City. Sea
side, t Milwaukie, St. Helens,
Lakeview, Bend. Astoria, Red
mond. Coos Bay. Coquille, Hills
boro, Salem. Albany, Prineville,
Canby. Forest Grove. 'Dallas, Eu
gene, Beaverton, Oceanlake, Sil
verton, Oswego, Mill City, Hood
River, Cottage Grove, McMinn
ville, Ashland, Newberg. Willa
mina. Carlton, Sherwood. Day
ton, Molalla, North Bend, Ban
don, Myrtle Point, Grants Pass,
Springfield, Lebanon, West Linn,
Sandy. Estacada and Scappoose.
Richland Goes Along
Richland, the atomic city, so
far is the only Washington local
ity cast of the Cascades adopt
ing daylight saving time. But the
Tri-City Herald is conducting a
poll to determine whether its
subscribers want the neighbor
ing cities of Kenncwick and Pas
co to follow suit. So far, the
poll shows daylight time favored.
Last year, Richland adopted day
light time while Kennewick and
Pasco remained on standard.
Spokane has set the standard
time pace for other cities In east
ern Washington, including Walla
walla, wenatchee, Ellensburg.
Omak. Okanogan, Ephrata and
Moses Lake. The northern Idaho
cities of Coeur d'Alene and Lew
iston normally follow Spokane's
decision, xms year, vigorous ef
forts are being made to adopt
fast time in Lewiston and Coeur
d'Alene, but the city fathers so
far have decided they will fol
low Spokane.
California Cuts
Resort Prices in
Bids for Tourists

first time since the war, Califor
nia resort owners are dangling
bait to attract vacationists to
their winter havens.
Resort business is down as
much as 20 per cent in some
areas and off 10 oer cent gener
ally, the Automobile Club of
Southern California reported
Meal prices are dropping and
many owners are striving to
stimulate lagging mid-week trade
with special money-saving inducements.
Big Bear lake resorts, for in
stance, offered free use of ski
and toboggan equipment to
guests on week-days. Many snow
areas reduced ski tow rates.
Dude Ranch S5
A Lucerne Valley dude ranch
offered lodging, meals and all
ranch facilities in February for
55 per day.
Another ranch near victor-
ville featured free first-run
movies regularly. Many hotels
and motels around Palm Springs
served complimentary break
fasts to guests.
In some desert areas, small
hotels and lodges have arranged
swimming pool, golf course and
other privileges for guests, even
though those facilities are not
available on the grounds.
Several popular resorts and
hotels offered package deals
whereby meals and lodging for
two days or more are available
at reduced rates.
Beach hotels, too, dangled off
season entirements. Most novel
is an "Ali Khan Suite" offered
bv one hotel at special rates. It
is an elaborate apartment recent
ly renovated to please the
Indian prince.

HORSE FLY OVER '
New Bern, N. C. (U.R) No fly
ing saucers have been reported
here but a herd of horses flew
over town. That's right. They
were on a National Airlines
night cargo plane, en route from
New York to Venezuela.
Chehalli, Wash. (U.R) A trac
tor crashed through a fence and
into a barn in which Mrs. Alice
Peterson was milking a cow. The
frightened cow lunged, injuring
Mrs. Peterson. A jury awarded
her $5,000 damages and $5 for
damage to the barn.
