Ban On Interstate Shipping
Of Slot Machines Approved
By Senate Commerce Group
Washington, Apr. 12 (U.R)
The senate interstate commerce
committee today unanimously
approved a justice department
proposal which would ban inter
state shipment of slot machines
and other gambling devices.
The committee gave its ap
proval just eight days after
Chairman Edwin C. Johnson
(D., Colo.) introduced the bill at
the request of Attorney General
J. Howard McGrath.
Boost by Hoover
The bill includes the recom
mendations of the attorney gen
eral's recent conference on law
nforcement. FBI Director J. Ed
gar Hoover gave the proposal a
strong boost before the house
appropriations committee.
The bill would prohibit the
ihipment of gambling devices in
interstate commerce except in
ttates where such devices are
legal.
The committee approved the
"one-armed-bandit" bill as sen
ate democratic leaders guaran
teed early senate action on legis
lation to set up a special five
man group to conduct a $150,000
Investigation into the operation
of interstate crime syndicates.
The bill would require manu
facturers of gambling devices to
register with the collector of in
ternal revenue and furnish
monthly sales reports. Gambling
devices themselves would have
to be numbered so that author
ities could keep tab on them.
Subject to Jail, Fine
Violators of the provision for
bidding shipment of gambling
devices could be subject to two
years in jail, a S5.000 fine, or
both. Manufacturers who failed
to register their products and
mark their shipments could re
ceive a $2,000 fine and a one
year jail sentence.
The committee bill is one of
two justice department propos
als which stemmed from the re
cent crime conference. A com
merce sub-committee begins
hearings Monday on the other
proposal which would forbid in
terstate transmission of "certain
gambling information."

Scientific Secrets
Philadelphia, Apr. 13 ;U.R)
Science must turn its attention
to plants to tap an enormous
amount of natural resources still
unexplored, the American Chem
ical society was told today.
Prof. A. J. Haagen-Smit of the
California Institute of Techno
logy told the society's 117th na
tional meeting that "only a few
per cent" of the quarter million
plants listed by scientists have
been taken apart chemically and
tested to see what valuable pro
ducts they might yield.
He listed as an example his 20
years of research on flavorings,
perfumes and other essential oils
recognized by the S1.000 Fritzche
prize given him at the conven
tion by the society.

51 -Year Record Set
In Church Attendance
Ohio City, O. (U.R) Marion
Snyder, 79, believes he has set
a good record for church attend
ance. This year Snyder rounded
out 51 years of perfect church
attendance, a total of 2.604 Sun
days, at St. Peters Evangelical
United Brethren church, one
mile west of his home. Snyder
began attending church six years
earlier but missed three bundays
in that period.
Snyder has never held an of
ficial position in the church nor
has he taught a Sunday school
class.
He pointed out, however, that
boredom is not limited to the
female side of the family. He
noted that wife-beating cases al
ways increase during strikes
when the men are idle and do
not have their work to occupy
their minds.

Northwest Supplies
Nation with Fruit
Most of the national carlot
shipments of apples and pears
originate in Pacific northwest
shipping districts, according to
the weekly tree fruits and nut
crops review prepared by the
Oregon State college extension
service.
Last week 671 carloads of
apples were shipped in the coun
try by rail and all but 13 cars
were from Washington and Ore
gon. Total pear shipments by
rail were 63 carloads all but
five from Oregon and Washing
ton.
California markets take
part of the apples and pears
shipped from the northwest but
cold storage holdings of the
fruits in California were smaller
than a year ago, the extension
service reported.
Some pears are arriving in
the United Mates irnm the south
ern hemisphere. On April 18
4,730 boxes of pears are due to
arrive in New York from Buenos
Aires. A shipment of 2,076 boxes
of pears left Capetown, South
Africa, for New York, on
March 14.
struction are already on hand.
Feast explained, but additional
funds are in the process of be
ing raised by an interested group
in Eugene. The Easter Sale agen

staff the school.
Building Described
The building will be located
on a six-acre tract of on Donald
street, between 34th and 37th

be a single story structure of
frame and masonry.
There will be considerable
window space, plus a 10 by 45
foot glassed-in play area and a
series of classrooms and therapy
treatment rooms. Dormitory fa
cilities are planned as an addi
tion in the future.
"We will have one of the fin
est hospital schools of its kind
in the country when completed,"
Feast said. "There is certainly a
real need for such a facility in
the state of Oregon."
The hospital school Is open to
children from throughout the

Bed, Not Pills, Found
Best Cure for Colds
Minneapolis (U.R) If experi
ence makes experts, you can
take the word of Minnesotans
that the best way to cure a cold
is to go to bed.
Fourty-four per cent have one
or two colds. Seven per cent
have only one cold but it lasts
all winter, they say.
The cure prescribed most oft
en, or in 33 per cent of the cases,
was to "go to bed." Pills and
cold tablets were the answer of
24 per cent and chest rubs of 21
per cent.
One fifth of those questioned
said: "Do nothing. Let it run its
course.
