China said today.
These reports said the com
munists now have about 300

Japanese types and American
planes received under lend
lease. Recent nationalist reports said
communist fighter planes en
countered over Shanghai refused
combat to nationalist bombers.
Other reports said the commu
nists have massed 100,000 troops
south of Hangchow bay on the
mainland for an expected assault
on me cnusan isianas, national

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE
SHAKING PALSY P ARALYSIB AGITANS
Or. Brady
Judging by the number of let
ters I receive requesting infor
mation shaking palsy, it is
evident mat
the treament of
this condition
has been large
ly ineffective
up to this time.
Shaking pal
sy Paralysis
Agltans and
Parkinson's dis
ease are all
names for the
same disease.
It is a disease of
later life, ap
pearing usual
ly in the sixties, and nothing is
known as to the actual cause.
It commences insidiouslv. Usu
ally, tht victim's attention is
first directed to his condition by
some one else. Bodily rigidity
and tremor (trembling-twitching)
are the outstanding symp
toms of the disease.
The tremor Is most noticeable
in the hands and fingers where a
"pill-rolling" movement becomes
more or less constant. The mus
cular rigidity limits the ease of
the victim's movements which
become slow and deliberate. In
walking the victim leans forward
to get started and then takes
short running steps to maintain
his balance. The muscular rigid
ity involves the face which be
comes set and expressionless.
Late in the disease some im
pediment of speech occurs. The
intellect remains intact and sen
sation is not disturbed. Victims
of the disease who are engaged
in mental pursuits may continue
to work indefinitely, but ulti
mately become highly restricted
in their physical activities. Al
though pain is not a part of the
disease, arthritis which might
have existed previously, becomes
troublesome, particularly in the
shoulder joints where restriction
of movement Is most annoying.
Medical treatment relieves the
rigidity to some extent but has
little effect upon the tremor.
Strong muscular effort will stop
the tremor for a few minutes.
The tremor affects the handwrit
ing which exhibits a typical
shakiness.
Much interest has centered
upon certain drugs which have
been used in this affliction.
These drugs, while appreciably
effective, often produce undesir
able side-effects such as annoy
ing dryness of the mouth, nose
and throat. Frequent muscular
manipulation and massage are
of some value but other forms of
physical medicine have not add
ed much to the scope of remedies.
At times the tremor may be
come very coarse and involve a
large part of the body. Such
cases are relieved by a surgical
operation which is performed
upon the spinal cord In the neck.
The incision is made in the back
of the neck overlying the spine.
Following the operation, paraly
sis of one side of the body re
sults for a short time, but con
trol returns along with disap
pearance of or great improve
ment in the tremor.
An operation upon the brain
has also resulted In improvement
in many cases. The indications
for surgical interference must be
determined by the physician in
charge of the individual cases as
no hard and fast rule can be ap
plied. Surgery is reserved for
those cases which have resisted
all medical treatment.
Not only do we know little or
nothing about the cause of this
disease we know nothing about
how to prevent it. However,
some cases appear to be due to
arteriosclerosis at any rate they
accompany it and measures
against this development seem
worth while. Again, even these
measures" are indefinite and re
late to the maintenance of gen
eral neaun. Here is anotner ms-
ease In which our hopes and
wishes far exceed our under
standing. QUESTION! b ANSWERS
