Landscape planting about a
house should be a decoration,
carefully planned to enhance the
beauty of the building, complet
ing an attractive picture as it is
viewed from the street.
When tall trees dwarf the
house, and over-large shrubs and
evergreens hide it, and prevent
the occupants from seeing out
of the windows, the planting has
not achieved its purpose.
Advise Low Plants
Only low growing plants
should be planted in fsont of
low homes: and the brightly col
ored annuals of dwarf habit are
becoming popular as the most
suitable plants for this purpose.
Their color gives a welcome
touch, and they leave the view
from windows unobstructed.
Seed may be started early in
seed boxes indoors, and grown
to a size suitable for transplant
ing by the time the soil can be
prepared. There are many va
rieties which will grow quickly
from seed sown directly in the
border where the plants are to
grow, and they will bloom until
freezing weather comes in the
fall. Besides providing a decora
tion for the house, many annuals
are suitable for cutting, to be
used in the house.
Dwarf single and double
French marigolds, as shown in
the illustration, come in tones
of orange, yellow and maroon,
with several two-tone blends of
these colors. Cynoglossum, or
Chinese forget-me-not, used as a
ribbon planting in the back
ground, blooms freely all sum
mer, retaining its lovely blue
coloring in hot weather.

Sales on Increase
San Francisco, Apr. 12 (U.R)
Building materials sales showed
a substantial gain for February
in Los Angeles, San Francisco,
and Seattle over the same pe
riod a year ago, the department
of commerce reported today.
Sales of automobiles, furni
ture, and food were higher than
the national average or com
pared favorably over February,
1949.
Department store sales were
up five per cent in Seattle, but
Los Angeles reported a similar
drop for the period.
Los Angeles lumber and build
ing material sales climbed to 20
per cent, while San Francisco
showed a 16 per cent gain and
Seattle IS per cent.

Cold Frame Need
Seen For All Size
Gardens, All Year
The smaller your garden, the
more you need a cold frame. It
will multiply your harvest of
both vegetables and flowers.
A cold frame is useful the
year around. It will carry over
the winter safely pansics, del
phiniums, and other perennials
and biennials sown in the late
summer and early fall. There is
no way you can use the few
square feet of garden space re
quired for it, to better advantage.
Any Can Build
Anyone who can drive a nail,
and operate a saw, can build a
cold frame. The boards can be
cut this winter in the basement
or garage, and put together in a
short time as soon as possible to
work outdoors.
Since inexpensive elcclric heat
will turn a cold frame into a
hotbed, the older manure-heated
hotbed is seldom seen. Heat is
not needed for most of the uses
to which a cold frame can be
put; and being without objection
able dirt or odor it can be placed
near the house, where steps will
be saved.
Any Dimensions
The illustration is a practical
working-drawing of a standard
one-sash cold frame. Standard
glazed sash is 3 by 6 feet; but a
frame can be made any conven
ient dimensions, if sash of a suit
able size is available. Sash cov
ered with transparent plastic ma
terials will be much lighter than
glazed-sash, and also will allow
ultra-violet rays to pass through
to the plants.
The usual practice is to sink
the frame into the ground about
six inches, and to pile earth
around it outside, for insulation.
Inside it may be filled to ground
level with the best top soil avail
able, or the floor may be covered
with two or three inches of cin
ders or gravel, on which shallow
seed boxes (flats) are placed.
Many prefer sowing the seeds in
flats, which can be carried to
the garden at transplanting time.
A location in the full sun all
day is required for best results
and shelter from cold winds is
beneficial. The sash should in
cline toward the south. Heavy
boards of cypress, white pine, or
redwood are preferable, since
the frame will often be wet and
must resist decay.
Because leaf lettuce is de
manded by'hotels and restau
rants for fine' salads, it is grown
extensively in greenhouses all
winter. Home gardeners may en
joy it all summer at small expense.
