Well we hope this is not true.
We know nothing about this young multi-millionaire Dona
hue he may or may not be OK but we heartily agree with
"Papa" Bauer that romance and golf don't mix, and somehow this
natural, wholesome, unspoiled girl, as the wife of Playboy "Woo
lia" strikes this department as N.G. We have a pious hunch such a
match would not only spoil Alice's golf game but her life. We
would not be so fearful about Mar lene she could, we imagine,
take a rich husband even if a spoiled one in her stride. But
Alice is different.
We hope there is no more to this gossip than to other juicy
offerings from the keyhole brigade In this man's town. Our hope
is both Bauer girls will steer clear of romantic involvement until
at least one of them perhaps both win the national amateur golf
crown. That goal reached, the undersigned would feel no further
responsibility! ! !
There is loud acclaim hereabouts for the new abbreviated "post
card" Republican platform.
Well we grant it is an improvement over the long-winded and
ridiculous odus Droduced bv the GOP national croup some weeks
ago. But we still wonder just how the national debt is to be low
ered WITHOUT raising taxes, and precisely WHERE government
assistance becomes interference and federal planning destroys our
liberties and establishes socialism? We welcome the brevity and var
ious deletions, but the total still adds up, as we see it, to a lot of
double-talk and unadulterated hokum.
Sneakino of oolitics we have been particularly disappointed in
the recent utterances and comments of Senator Taft of Ohio.
The writer has never been a "Taft man. but during recent
years we have become more and more favorably impressed by the
Ohio senator's honesty, courage and downright intellectual integ
rity. Probably his campaign for reelection In Ohio is to blame.

smear campaign was INEXCUSABLE. And now his talk about Tru

The laler stand is especially surprising for only a short time
hbo Taft deserted his old isolationist line and after a triD to Europe
endorsed a common bi-partisan foreign policy, including a continu
ance of the Marshall plan.
The only answer we can see Is that the senior senalor nas re
turned to the Isolationist doctrine of his earlier years, which it is
now plain he really never left, although he did for a brief time en
joy a "lucid interval. There seems general agreement rati win
win reelection to the senate hands down again demonstrating you
can't beat SOMEone with a NOBODY but his campaign should
eliminate him as desirable Republican presidential material for
all time to come,
Soeaklne of Drcsldentlol candidates this department will not
be surprised to see young Senator Lodge of Massachusetts, become
a real contender six years hence, if not before. This much is cer
tain, he shows signs of growth in enlightenment and stature which
augurs well for his political future. Unlike his famous predecessor
of the same name, young Lodge is to the left rather than to the
right of center. He refuses to allow blind partisanship to dim his
view of the realities and proprieties of international relationships.
His comments on the latest GOP Dlatform were particularly to the
point, and his refusal to Join In the communist witch hunt, and
the cheap attempt to "get' Secretary Acheson, a credit to his good
judgment and sound statesmanship. -
Finally his suggestion that this socalled "loyalty probe' be
taken out of politics and placed in the hands of a specially ap
pointed non-partisan commission empowered to rid the govern
ment of any real subversives but without smearing the innocent
and impairing the country's standing abroad, strikes this depart
ment as EXCELLENT. , ,. . ,
We still have some doubts about the young man s political
maturity, but if he continues along present lines, we feel sure, that
president or no president, he will become a fine force, not only in
his party, but in the development of his country along the most
constructive progressive lines.

We don't necessarily regard
them as personal liars. We just
assume that they are following
the governmental "line" and are
telling the people what govern
ment thinks it is best for the peo
ple to be told.
More or less ALL OVER THE
WORLD at this moment in his
tory that seems to be the atti
tude of governments toward .the
people.
THIS comes from Paris:

PLE OF FRANCE will never
make war on Russia.'
That is going pretty far. The
French communists evidently
have a lot of confidence in their
ability to HANDLE FRANCE.
We were sorrv "Old Man Flu" prevented our looking-ln on
the basketball finals in Madison Square Garden last week.
We listened in on the radio and did our bit to cheer on New ,
York college toward the double title. invitational and intercol-1
legiate. For here were a bunch of most deserving boys straight I
from Al Smith's sidewalks of New York, two of them colored,
and all of them "under-privileged" in the literal sense. And how
they did play, not so much as individual stars as a team. It was
not only a great basketball victory but a great victory for this
over-grown metropolis and Its essential democracy. And the people
here the rank and file, got a tremendous bang out of it.
There is a general belief Manhattan is a cold, impersonal,
soilless Babylon, but like so many generalities it isn't the truth,
or at any rate only a half-truth. Old Father Knickerbocker is a per
fectly normal human in spite of his grotesque proportions. He has
a heart. the only trouble Is one needs considerable paraphernalia
to FIND It such at stetheseopes and step-ladders. R.W.R.

years ago the Jury would have
acquitted him. It was a differ
ent world then. Communism was
just a word. It didn't mean much
to us. It is different now. The
truth about it is beginning to
soak into us.
We are beginning to recognize
Russian communism for the gris
ly and terrible thing it is.
A FEW years ago, Alger Hiss
wouldn't have been convict
ed (he, too. by the way, was
found guilty of having perjured
himself).
1 doubt if four or five years
ago the Russian Gubitchev could
have been convicted by an Amer
ican jury. Or the Coplon girl.
Our mood then was different.
The black cloud of commu
nism hadn't yet begun to darken
in our sky.
I'M SORRY for Bridges. I'm
a sorry for any man possessing
great ability as a leader who
sells himself to a cause such as
communism. But I can't help
agreeing with the jury.
What Bridges has done has
tended to WEAKEN America
not to strengthen her. No one
who has seen the great port of
San Francisco one of the finest
in the world lying idle and
helpless and useless for months
at a time in REPEATED in
stances can doubt that.
Weakening America isn't good
for longshoremen or any other
working men.
It IS GOOD for RUSSIA.

to requirements of the state law
with respect to advertising of
eggs for sale.
The law provides that the same
prominence must be given to the
correct grade and size of eggs
as is given to the price. Beals
said it is illegal to use the terms
"fresh," "strictly fresh" or sim
ilar in advertising any grade ex
cept grade AA and grade A eggs.

lowing my advice.
He says he had always had
"itching piles." That may mean
piles as well as itching or It may
mean just itching. The only way
to determine whether a person
who thinks he has piles, has
piles, is by examination by
means of tho proctoscope (recto
scope), this is, internal, "blind"
or bleeding piles. A' good many
persons who think they have
piles and use all sorts of so-called
pile remedies rather than have
a proper examination have no
piles at all.
The reader gives his opinion
that the itching depended chief
ly upon how much coffee he
drank.
Possibly, although I doubt
that coffee drinking in modera
tion is a cause of such itching.
The ten-dollar word for itching
without apparent skin trouble is
pruritus. Let's call it just itching
I was roundly scolded by a
fine editor once, because I in
advertently used the word pru
ritus in my column and his sec
retary, a very refined young
man, was outraged by my lan
guage. I never heard whether
the editor and his secretary were
more embarrassed when they
looked it up in Webster.

special towel and special soap.
The washing and drying takes
only a minute, and ever since I

of yours 1 have been comfortable :
