Japanese Tour Items
Told By Dr. Elliott
Dr. Bert Elliott and Mrs. El'
Iiott. who left their home here
recently lor an extended tour of
the Orient and Europe, are pres
ently visiting places of interest
In Japan. The following letter
from Dr. Elliott aescnoes some
of the sights enjoyed in the
Tokvo region:
"Before the war the Nikko
Palace hotel, from which this
letter is being written, was the
summer palace of Emperor Hiro
hito. We are occupying the
Chrvsanthemum room the bed'
room occupied by the emperor
and his wife, me carvings,
crests, paintings and mats are
out of this world.
"Nearby are the best Shinto
shrines in Japan and all set in
a huge forest of hand-pianiea
350-year-old cedar trees.
Timber Small
"Most of the sawmill timber
in .Tannn is small and the saw
mills about as large as the office
of one of Medford s plants,
"Some of the logs are brought
in on well-balanced two-wheeled
carts drawn by an ox. Most of
the heavier freight here is cart
ed by man or woman power.
"Pears here grow on over
head arbors like grapes at home,
the arbors covering the entire
orchard. Farther north we saw
a dust storm. Up there the fields
are larffer and there is less dyk
ing. The wheat is grown in hills
like corn, in tne Detier xoKyo-Yokohama-Hiroshina
areas all
farming and gardening except
rice growing is done on the top
of little dykes, 12 to 14 inches
high and 14 to 36 inches across
the top. Between are angular
ditches about 14 to 20 inches
wide where water Is run at times.
On top of the dykes the produce
is weeded, hoed and fertilized
from "honey buckets" by means
of a long-handled dipper. Con
tents of the honey bucket is di
luted with water.
Vegetables Raited
"All kinds of vegetables and
wheat are raised, the wheat be
ing in single or double rows.
"Roads between the cities are
good but the country roads are
series of narrow, graveled lanes
with acute turns. Most of them
are lined with small houses and
are full of children, chickens and
carts. Practically none of the
buildings, even in the cities, are
painted.
"We attended a Japanese Meth
odlst church service and could
recognize the Lord's prayer and
some of the old hymns. The
Japanese are more receptive to
Christianity than at any time in
their history, our guide is a
Methodist, our assistant guide a
Catholic and our driver a
Buddhist.
"Mrs. Elliott much enjoyed go
ing through the NovitHke bone
china factory which employs
4,uuu people.
Soao at Tic
"We have found Medford soap
excellent as tips everywhere
and one or two American cigar
ettes are also good. They cost 10
cents in traders scrip plus 90
yen (about 30 cents) tax.
Yogurt on Safe at
Retail Establishments
John Propp, operator of the
Sweet Maid Dairy products com
pany, said today that because
of demand by consumers, he has
arranged for retail outlets in the
city for yogurt, the fermented
milk food which he introduced
in Medford about a month ago.
The product is now available
at the Groceteria, East Side mar
ket. Super Value market, Hng
an'i grocery and the Onkdnle
market, Propp said, and will
loon be available at the Big Y
market.
Propp will also sell yogurt at
retail at his own establishment
at 516 South Riverside avenue.
He said it is in particular de
mand among inose who have be- The annunl sale is snonsored

Ities where it has been available, pied Children and Adults.
"Among the appetizers served
us one evening at a hotel were
tiny hard-boiled quail eggs with
enormous yolks.
"Bought a small, ancient, second-hand
hara-kiri sword -with
an attached signed historical
certificate as long as the pedi
gree on an American blueblood
bovine. Inserted in the handle is
one of those cute knives that are
thrown so silently but effectively
into the back of a victim, from
any distance up to 40 feet.
Geishas Are News
"Male members of the Mail
Tribune news room will be in
terested to know that reportorial
duties here include writing up
geisha girl activities. Mrs. El
liott and I just met two editors
at the geisha girl school where
we spent an hour. The girls were I
practicing on their musical in
struments, singing and dancing
ior me coming cnerry lestival.
"The travel itinerary ai
ranged by the Rogue Travel
service in Medford is proving I
that the manager, George Lewis,
Dut in a lot of time and effort in
its preparation.
Befie Davis' Mate
Craves Affection,
Likes House Work
Hollywood, Aprl. 7 (U.PJ
Artist William Grant Sherry,
burly former wrestler, said to
day that he "lovod" keeping
house for his wife, Actress Bette
Davis, but she was always "too I
tired" to give him the affection
he craved.
That's why. Sherry said, he
would contest MissDavis' suit
to divorce him because "she's
Dlenty at fault and I'm tired of
being pushed around.
Loved Being Housewife
"She was the breadwinner and
I was the housewife," he said.
'and I've loved doing it. All I
asked in return was love and af
fection. I'm a man who needs
lot of that.
"But when she'd come home I
from work she'd always say she
was too tired. I wouldn't get as
much as a kiss from her. She was
too absorbed in her work.
"I'd always have dinner ready
for her when she got home. I'd
take off her shoes and bring her
her slippers and fix her a drink.
I pressed her dresses when he
maid wasn't here. I'd draw her
bath and give her massages. I
felt It was a privilege to do
tilings for her.
Wanted Love
"She'd say, 'Well, what do you
want? You're adequately fed and
clothed. I didn t want money.
I wanted love. But she hasn't
time for a husband when she
works.
The big-eyed slar filed her di
vorce suit lust fall, postponed it
when they kissed and made up.
and then ordered it put on the
fire again after Sherry downed
Actor Barry Sullivan in a one-
punch brawl at an RKO studio
party Monday night.
