May we introduce you to
Harry Salter. Maestro Harry
Salter, "Stop The Music" con
ductor, (Sundays over Station
KYJC and ABC) is one of the
few people who knows the exact
title of the "Mystery Melody"
even before it is played . . Why?
He picks if out. He'll preach to
you on "Americana and Music"
at the drop of a baton.
Although the fun-filled format
remains constant as "Stop The
Music" glides into its third year,
an additional feature was added
several months ago, the Bonus
City.
For the Bonus City gimmick,
six phone calls are made to a
specific city five minutes after
the show goes off the air- The
names of those to be called are
mentioned during the show and
a medley of tunes is played. Each

Lake, famed as a harried hus

deemed by "Surprise Package"
emcee Jay Stewart the world's
best qualified judge of family

ON RINGWORM
Ringworm of the scalp may
be caused by several different
fungi, each of which produces a
slightly flitter
ent effect. Al
though the ex
perienced phy
sician in a y be

the identical
fungus involv
ed, nothing
short of a mi
croscopic x
amination will

n os 1 1 or

fungus.
Ringworm of the scalp is a dis
ease of childhood. If the disease
is not cured by medicinal means,
it usually disappears at puberty
the age of beginning of sexual
maturity. Rarely, when caused
by a certain fungus, the disease
may carry over into adulthood.
Typically, in ringworm of the
scalp, separated areas develop in
which the hairs are broken off
close to the scalp, presenting a
stubbly appearance. Clusters of
fungi in such numbers as to be
visible to the naked eye may be
seen attached to the hairs as a
coating. Depending upon the
specific fungus involved, the
scalp may or may not become
inflamed. Peculiarly, one of the
most damaging fungi to which
children are susceptible as com
pletely harmless to animals.
The disease is acquired by
either direct or indirect contact.
Any place an infected child rests
his head against the back of a
chair, for example, becomes a
new reservoir of infection. The
disease may be spread by com
mon use of combs and brushes.
The disease has reached epi
demic proportions. Despite this,
it is not general practice to keep
infected children home from
school. The reason for this is that
from three to six months of
treatment' are required to cure
the disease, and personal con
trol measures have been shown
to be of value.
Spreading of the disease to
others may be largely controlled
by compelling the victim to wear
a stocking cap at all times, which
serves to prevent broken off
hairs from settling into a loca
tion in which they may be picked
up by others. The cap should be
changed frequently and should
be boiled for ten minutes when
removed. The top of a woman's
cotton stocking is well suited
for the purpose of making the
cap.
I full well realize that al
though this is a proven preven
tative, many parents feeling that
their child was infected because
of some other parent's careless
ness, refuse to so adorn their
own child and take the attitude
of letting others run the risk.
This attitude plus the supposed
undesirability of marking a child
as a victim of the diseases, has
done much to cause the disease
to spread.
Diagnosis of the disease is fa
cilitated by use of a "Wood's
Lamp" part of a physician's
equipment which when held
close to the scalp in a darkened
room, causes the infected hairs
to gleam or fluoresce.
An essential of treatment is to
remove all infected hairs by the
roots. This must be persisted in
perhaps three or four times a
week. The hair should be sham
pooed daily and an appropriate
medication prescribed by a
physician applied.
One type of ringworm of the
scalp caused by a certain fun
gus responds best to x-ray
treatment. The identification of
this type and the decision to use
x-ray is obviously the province
only of a physician.
If parents would cooperate
with physicians and public
health officials, the epidemic
character of this disease would
ease of chilhood. If the disease
ly, the infected child seldom ob
jects to wearing a stocking cap.
The parent is a greater prob
lem than the child.
