'Moby Dick' Author
Went to Sea Young
Pittsiield, Mass. (U.R) i . .us
field book collector has uncov
ered evidence that Herman Mel
ville went to sea at 12 and
wrote "Moby Dick" from exper
ience, not from book sources.
Samuel T. Sukel has a maga
zine article of 1835 by a "well
educated young man of Massa
chusetts, who had been on a
whaling voyage. Sukel thinks
the young man was Herman Mel
ville. Melville was 16 when the new
ly discovered article was pub
lished. Sukel claims the author
must have signed on at least
four years before. Whaling voy
ages, he said, lasted several
years.
First Voyage in 1839
Scholars have placed Mel
ville's first whaling voyage in
1839, when he was 20. They said
much of his knowledge of the
dangerous sea chase came from
books. The latest finding would
show that Melville wrote, as did
Jack London, of the things he
knew.
Sukcv sees a striking resem
blance between passages in the
articles under scrutiny and the
novels known to be Melville s.
What's more, he said, Mel
ville dcDlored in his novels the
practice of sending young boys
to sea, possibly reiiecting nis
own hard experience.
Play Golf, Live Long
Aged Doctor Advises
St. Louis (U.R) Dr. Willis Hall,
the city's oldest practicing physi
cian, has two tips on longevity
on his 83rd birthday.
The doctor, who began practic
ing medicine in 1881, advised:
One take up golf when you
are 40, and play it regularly for
SO years.
Two come from a family of
long-lived people.
Dr. Hall was a real golfing
fan until an attack of sciatica
forced him off the links two
years ago. Now his exercising is
restricted to gardening and short
walks.
At 03, the physician is close
to the family pace in the matter
of longevity. Two of his uncles
lived to be 94 and 93.

France Leads Western World In
Growing Young, Expert Discloses
Paris (U.R) France, after 50
years of growing old faster than
any nation in the world, now
leads the western world in grow
ing young.
A population expert, Alfred
Sauvy, director of the Institute
of Demographic Studies, points
out that i ranee s birth rate, av
eraging 850,000 yearly for the
last four years, now outstrips
that of any other western nation.
France has gained an average
of 320,000 population yearly
through the surplus of births
over deaths.
Before the war the situation
was in reverse. The average
yearly birth rate was 650,000
and France actually was losing
population.
France was like a sinking
ship," Sauvy said in an inter
view. "Her birth rate was so low
that the young generations were
unable to replace the old in the
life of the country."
More Time Needed
But even with the post-war
spurt in the birthrate, more time
is needed to solve France's popu
lation problem. Before the
French revolution in 1789, there
was one old person for 15 young.
Today there is one old for five
young.
The fact that France still is an
old nation has a political impli
cation which most people miss,
Sauvy said. In the next general
election, not later than the end
of next year, the voters' age will
look like this:
21 to 40 years of age 39 per
cent of ellgibles.
41 to 60 years of age 38 per
cent of ellgibles.
Over 60 23 per cent of ell
gibles. "The majority of the voters
will be over 40," Sauvy said.
"They will tend to be more con
servative than the young.
"A parliament elected by old
voters tends to be old itself, and
the same goes for the govern
ment." Reasons Varied
The reasons for the changes In
France's number one pre-war
problem, growing old, are varied,
Sauvy said.
"Among them are government
