Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D.
Readers should addraas inqulriaa to: Dr. William Brady,
26 El Camino. Bavtrly Hills. Calif.
ITCHING MAY BE
Iitching in the region of the
opening of the rectum if often a
stubborn, persistent and annoy
ing symptom.
It may be due
to a number of
causes. The
term "itching
piles." is often
heard which
Inrliratps that
ijihttrt persons think
Ul 'A Jf a that piles ac-
I I W M I tually itch, and
I 11 I that any itch-
... ... V..V.
tal region is
Di. Brady due to piles.
' Many per
sons with severe piles have no
itching whatever, but quite often
the two may co-exist. Itching
may occur when the victim is
free of piles in many instances
tKln tags, winch are small
folds of excess skin found ad
jacent to the rectal opening, are
often mistaken for piles. These
tags may be the site of chronic
itching. Presence of these tags
together with itching, is prob
ably the source of the "itching
piles" notion.
Actual piles may be the source
of itching without themselves
being "itchy." A pile, ordinarily,
is quite insensitive, but may pro
voke irritation and discomfort
by its mechanical effect upon lo
cal circulation and adjacent tis
sues. Chronic itching may be per
manently relieved in many cases
by the obliteration preferably
by . the ambulant method, -of
piles, where the piles are the sole
source of the itching.
I specify the ambulant method
for many reasons, the one in
point being that the treatment is
so mild and painless that even
if the itching is not entirely re
lieved thereby, the unnecessary
ordeal of a surgical operation Is
avoided. It would be unfortu
nate to submit to the pain, ex
pense and loss of time involved
in undergoing surgery with the
hope of relieving itching, to find
the itching still present if the
California Approves
Slot Machine Seizure
Sacramento, Apri. 5 (U.R)
Two slot machine seizure bills
won final approval in the Cali
fornia legislature today.
The assembly sent the bills to
Gov. Earl Warren for signature
by unanimously accepting minor
amendments added by the senate-
The upper house passed the
bills late yesterday by 33 to 2
and 32 to 0 votes. One senator
said slot machine operators were
spending millions of dollars in
bribing law enforcement officers
to allow them to run.
The bills would allow the
seizure of the machines under
any circumstances.
Earlier, the governor told a
press conference he would sign
the bills as he understood them.
He added that the bills "would
be of great assistance in the fight
on organized crime."
Norwegian Commies
Denied U. S. Entry
Oslo, Norway, Apr. 5 (U.R)
The Norwegian-American liner
Stavengerfjord was delayed here
today when the American em
bassy refused to grant U. S. en
try visas to four crew members
said to belong to the Norwegian
communist party.
A spokesman for the Oslo
branch of the Norwegian sailors
union said the Stavangerfjord
postponed her departure to per
mit a delegation from the crew
to visit Oskar Gudersen, Nor
wegian minister of justice.
The spokesman said they want
ed to know whether the U. S.
embassy's action was legal since
Norwegian citizens on a Norweg
ian ship are involved.
The embassy confirmed that
four sailors had been refused
visas, but had no further com
ment. Hog Prices Pushed
Higher at Chicago
Chicago. Apri. 5 U.R) Farm
ers pushed hog prices slightly
higher today by reducing their
shipments to market in the ab
sence of price supports.
Only 52.000 hogs were placed
on sale at the 12 major combelt
markets, compared with more
than 70,000 a week ago, before
price supports lapsed.
Prices opened steady to 25
cents per hundred pounds high
er. Market analysts believed some
farmers were holding hogs olf
the market until congress de
cides whether to appropriate
funds for renewal of price sup
ports. Smallpox Vaccine
Flown to Glasgow
Glassow. Scotland. Apr. 5
U.Ri Royal air force plane? (lew
more than 300,000 units of small
noN varriue to Glasgow today to
help build un slocks for pusiihle
mass immunization of everv per
son in western Scotland.
Dr. Stuart Laidlow, Glaegow
health officer, said he would
order mass vaccinations If more
than a few secondary cases ap
pear after the eight-day incuba
tion period ends today.
' By lonight we should have a
prettv trond idea of how bad IhCi
outbreak is," he said. . 1
CAUSED BY PILES
operation failed In Its purpose.
The ambulant treatment con
sists of a number of treatments
given in the doctor's office per
haps a half dozen or so which
are painless, require but a few
minutes to administer, and leave
the patient immediately free to
carry on with his usual routine.
The treatment is effected by
skillful use of a hypodermic
needle, and, in capable hands,
results in permanent cure.
The total cause of itching may
be difficult to determine in a
given case. It follows that what
ever is found to be abnormal
should be corrected in a pro
gre?sive effort to eradicate the
difficulty. The ambulant method
lends itself to this effort and does
not impose the hazard upon a
patient which is necessarily in
herent in all surgical procedures.
Diabetes may cause this type
of itching. It is one of the pos
sibilities which must be disposed
of, in any case. Fungus disease,
such as may be found in the
variety of ailments dubbed "ath
lete's foot," may be present in
this area and prove to be the
source of the itching.
Allergy or hypcrsensitiveness
to various food stuffs, wearing
apparel, chemicals, soaps, toilet
preparations and a host of other
substances may be involved in
the cause of the itching.
The ease with which piles may
be eradicated by the ambulant
method would suggest that if
piles are present in cases of itch
ing, they should be disposed of
as a preliminary and possibly
final step.
In intractable cases of Itching,
tatooing is sometimes effective.
Extensive surgical undermining
of the skin is necessary in oth
ers. Finally, itching may be caused
by other disorders of the rectum
and rectal outlet, apart from
piles. Fortunately, these condi
tions often can be handled suc
cessfully by a skillful physician
in his office, instead of surgical
treatment carried out in a hos
pital. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
