MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIPUIir -
Cut in Spending
On New Highways
Portland, Ore., Apr. 4 IU.R)
R. H. Baldock, Oregon state
highway engineer, wants to cut
spending on new highway con
struction in half and increase
work on repairs.
Baldock yesterday said he
would soon formally recommend
to the state highway commis
sion that about half the $15,
000.000 spent annually on new
highway construction be divert
ed to repair and strengthening
of existing highways.
Much Damage Done
The engineer told the com
mission that much damage had
been done to the state's highways
during the last two years. He
blamed the damage partly on
increased trucking resulting
from population influx and part
ly on overloading by some operators.
Cutting new construction
funds in half will not mean half
as many miles of new construc
tion, but will mean less new
road mileage for a given amount
of money, Baldock said. He told
the commission that along with
strengthening old roads, it would
be necessary to build new high
ways stronger than those built
in the past.
Crommelin Thinking
Of Political Venture
Birmingham, Ala., Apr. 4-
(U.R) Cant. John G. Crommelin
says he has not decided definite
ly whether to enter Alabama
politics.
Crommelin, who was fur-
loughed by the navy as a result
of his stand on unification, said
that at present he is "discuss
ing the situation and getting in
formation on which to base a
decision."
Crommelin is considering run
ning as an independent in the
general election this year against
Sen. Lister Hill (D., Ala.).
He got interested in the race
too late to qualify for the demo
cratic primary of May Z.
"I have some very big per
lonal decisions to make," Crom
melin told friends here. "It's
complicated also by the fact
that I'm on indefinite furlough."
