The Brownie scout troop of Sha
dy Cove met March 24 at the
schoolhouse under leadership of
Mrs. Cora Lane, with Mrs. Al
Cooper as assistant leader. Work
taken up was piecing a quilt.
Plans were completed for a
Mothers' day program and tea,
the date set for May 12.
Upper Rogue Grange wlil give
a ham dinner open to the public
on Easter Sunday, April 9, at
Grange hall. Dinner will start
at 1 p. m. and continue through
the afternoon. Tickets are avail
able from Grange members.
Mrs. Hollie Swingle, who broke
her hip in a fall at her home
near Trail just before Christmas,
is reported mucn improved and
able to be around on crutches.
Mr. and Mrs. Swingle have
moved from their home at Trail
to a new home in the Sams Val
ley district.
Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Easlin of
Trail entertained with a square
dancing party at their home
March 19. Ten couples attended.

are two of the world's greatest
stunt fliers and have had many

WHAT TO DO AB OUT RINGWORM
Although the fungi which
cause ringworm are not highly
menacing to lite, they do cause

caused this dis
ease, it seemed
that cure
should be a
simple matter.
Experience has
proved the
contrary.
The mere fact that a drug may
rapidly destroy fungous growth
or Dactenai growth in a test
tuoe or culture is no reason
in itself why it should necessar
ily cure a disease caused by the
organisms (germs, bacteria, fun
gi) involved, if the various dis
ease-causing organisms would
wither up and die in the body
By the simple expedient of
squirting some antiseptic or gem-
icide upon inem, we would nave
few deaths from infection and
little reason for further research
in this field.
An antiseptic or germicide can
have but little effect upon germs
it can not reach. Dousing an in
fected area of skin with an anti
septice or germicide is somewhat
similar to a rain storm in a citv.
Very few persons get wet. Germs
lodged beneath the superficial
layers of the skin are mechanical-

Although ringworm affects
only the superficial layers of the
skin, many years of experience
have shown that powerful germi
cides and antiseptics by them
selves, do not cure the disease.
As a matter of fact, ringworm
is often complicated by injury to
the skin through the use of pow
erful remedies. Self-prescribed
remedies advertised to the pub
lic as the "answer" to the ring
worm problem often result in
bringing the victim to the doctor
with a skin dsiorder far worse
and more persistent than the or
iginal complaint.
Recently, the application of
strong, skin-destroying remedies
has given way to the use of mild
drugs containing an acid which
the skin normally manufactures
itself. It has been found that an
optimum amount of this acid,
kept in prolonged contact with
the skin, has been curative- with
out damaging or irritating the
tissues.
The use of this drug is known
to every physician who treats dis
eases of the skin. I do not men
tion the name of the drug be
cause I do not wish to encourage
self-prescribing. Further, the
drug Is so well known to the
medical profession that it is un
necessary to write me about it.
This drug is applicable both to
ringworm of the body and of
the feet.
Perhaps more "athlete's foot
exists in fancy than in fact. De
spite what appears to be utter
ly simple signs pointed out by
the purveyors of direct-to-the-public
"remedies," by which the
lay person can immediately diag
nose his own case, not every case
of itching, burning toes with
whitish moist skin in the webs,
is actually athlete's foot. More
than one geek has spent time and
money treating himself for ath
lete's foot which did not exist.
Inasmuch as the fungus may
be found in the shoes and cloth
ing of the victim providing a
ready source of re-infection,
these should be changed fre
quently. Ordinary laundering
and dry cleaning is sufficient for
clothes and underclothes.
Shoes may be disinfected by
formaldehyde. A few drops of
the solution may be placed upon
cotton which is Inserted into the
shoes. They are then wrapped in
paper or placed in an airtight
box and stored outdoors over
night. The neighborhood drug
gist should be willing to dispense
an adequate amount of the solu
tion necessary for the purpose.
From the standpoint of econ
omy and intelligence the victim
of ringworm or the person who
suspects he might have it is
wise in placing himself under a
doctor s care.
