Red Cross Instructs
Eleven Grey Ladies;
New Service Started
Inspired by the needs of com
munity service, membera of the
Jackson County Red Cross have
launched the new program
known as "Service to the Lom
munity." Eleven gray ladies
have completed a training course
which was conducted here dur
ing the week for those interested
in the course.
Women who completed the
course are Mrs. Arthur C ban
ders, Mrs. J. E. Gribble, Mrs.
Edward G. Burgess. Mrs. John
S. Dav. Mrs. Chester Guches
Mrs. Dale Newton, Mrs. L. B.
Thomas, Mrs. R. M. Bartels. Mrs.
Max Pierce. Mrs. I. E. Schuler
and Mrs. Shelbv Tuttle.
Mrs. Melvin Krows, Miss Vera
Humphrey and Miss Margaret
Nason also took advantage of the
informative program.
This is entirely an innovation
for gray ladies since it will have
been the only community where
such a service has been institut
ed bv Red Cross services.
Heretofore gray ladies have
been trained only for service by
the staffs of military hospitals,
Instruction given in the three
day session included such sub
jects as "activating a commu
nity service," social attitudes,
public welfare, health services
both in community and at home
and medical, psychological, per
sonal and sDiritual aspects.
Dr. A. Erin Merkcl. county
health officer, presented a pro
gram on child guidance, rehabil
itation and needs of an educa
tional program in health work.
Mrs. Blanche Frisbie, county
health nurse, gave in detail the
techniaue of home servicing.
"Medical Aspects of Lay Visit
ing" was presented by Dr. Rich
ard Sleeter. in wnicn ne stressen
understanding and the impor
tance of the right kind of pro
gram.
Mrs. Vera Thompson from
Oregon Commission for Blind
impressed members of the class
with her subject. "Psychological
Aspects of Visiting the Blind."
She urged education in use of
the "white cane and requested
the blind be spoken of only as
v i s u a 1 1 v handicapped. Mrs.
Thompsontatcd that there were
over 60 such handicapped per
sons in Jackson county.
The Rev. George R. Bolster
sooke to the gray ladies
"those doing Christian work who
go out and seek and do not wait
for it to come to their door."
Since this is a new branch of
Red Cross service in which there
is a great deal of interest, it is
being observed closely by area
office of the Red Cross in San
Francisco. Miss Mildred Samuel-
son, assistant director of that of
fice, stated she was confident this
grnuo would develop a pattern
which possibly could be followed
by other chapters.
This group will work in full
cnoneration with local doctors.
