j Low-Rent Housing
To Be Decided By

Portland voters learned today
they will have to decide in the
May 19 primary election wheth
er they want 2,000 units of low
rent federal housing constructed
here beginning before October 1.
City council members voted
to let residents decide on the
housing because of controversy
stirred up by the issue. Seattle
voters turned dowa tiie low-rent
housing offer in their March 14
election by a substantial major
ity. Groups Opposed
ODDOsition to such housing
generally has been by apartment
house owners, real estate groups
and miscellaneous property
groups. Housing unit proponents
generally are iouna in city courv
cils, housing authorities and la'
bor and "citizens' " groups.
In Oakland. Cal., low-rent
housing ODDonents accused three
councilmen of railroading the
low rent housing through the
council. In the subsequent re
call election, two of the coun
cilmen retained their posts, but
a third. Scott Weakley, drew
such a close vote that it was be-
ine contested.
Two thousand units at Phoe
nix, Ariz., are under construc
tion, but 50 federal housing
units in Yuma. Ariz., were re
fused by the Yuma city council.
Portland Leads
Northwest Cities
In New Building
Seattle. Mar. 30 (U.R) Port
land, for the second consecutive
month, led all Pacific northwest
cities in issuing of building per
mits last month as the value of
permits issued by 91 authorities
more than doubled in value over
those of a year ago, official fig
ures compiled by the Construc
tion News Bulletin today re
vealed.
The Rose City's 1950 Febru
ary figure ran at $5,550,770
against the 1949 figure of $348,
000.
Of the 23 Oregon cities re-
fiorting, 17 showed gains over
ast year and 19 reported in
creases over January, 1950. In
Washington, 27 citLr showed
gains over January, 1950, and
22 over last year. Ten of 11 Ida
ho cities showed increases over
January and eight reported
gains over February, 1949.
Seattle Leads State
Seattle reported the largest
total for the state of Washington
with $3,900,245. Bellingham,
Wash., appeared in the list of
top 10 cities for the first time
with a total of $586,694.

cluded: In Oregon, Albany, $31,
740; Astoria, $43,545; Bend, $34,
875; Coos Bay, $20,115; Eugene,
$1,516,376; La Grande, $12,188;
Medford, $251,774; Salem, $384,
925 and The Dalles, $45,900.
Good Samaritan Loses

woman faint in a store aisle.
Berlin placed his bundles on a
nearby counter and helped the
woman.
After medical help had arrived
Berlin stepped back with satis
faction, only to find someone
had stolen his packages.

Lucille, of the bright hair and
wisecracks to match, doesn't

as husband Desi Arnaz.
There are a lot of things men
can do that women can't and she,
for one, is happy to leave it at
that.
"There are times," she said,
"when I like to be mastered-.
What woman doesn't? It makes
us feel feminine."
Miss Ball Threatens
Miss Ball is not one to write
her congressman at the drop of a
vote. But she's threatening to
do something if the house of
representatives passed that bill.
The senate already did. So
far the boys in the lower house
haven't done much about it.
The whole thing's ridiculous,'
Lucille said. "If this becomes a
law I suppose we'll have to try
everything the men do. And 1
can't imagine anything duller
than sitting through a session of
stag jokes.
"Now we can get up and
leave. But the minute they make
us equal we won't have any ex
cuse." The same thing goes for pick
ing up dinne rchecks, and ali
mony. I
Have To Put Off
"Heavens," she wailed, "that'll
be the day! When women have
to pay off their divorced hus
bands." There's none of this equality
nonsense around the Ball-Ar-naz
household, Lucille'll have
you know, i
"If I put on a hat Desi doesn't
like off it comes," she said. "I
don't stand around arguing about
how we're equal and I know as
much about how I look as he
does. I want to look like he
wants me to.
"I like to be waited on, too,
and be taken care of. Right now
Desi's down at the beach paint
ing our boat so he can take me
on a vacation.

Military Planes Land
At Medford Airport
Two jet planes which landed
for refueling at the Medford air
port yesterday were air force
F-84s, or Thunderjets, it was
learned today. They were north
bound. The previous day the airport
was a terminal landing point for
a flight of navy reserve pilots,
flving F4U Corsair navy planes.
The flight was out of Seattle.
Thieves Take Jewels
From Portland Store
Roseburg. Ore., Mar. 30 (U.R)
Police today were looking for
the thieves that stole more than
S4.000 in diamond rings yester
day from the display window of
Lawson's Jewelry store here.
Police Chief Calvin H. Baird
said the thieves smashed a win
dow with a rock to get inside
the store. The thieves, wrapped
the rock in a newspaper to
deaden the sound of breaking
glass, he said.
The theft was covered parti
ally by insurance, Store Man
ager John Hardiman said.
Algeria is the largest wine pro
ducing country in Africa.
Most of the lead ore produced
in California is sent to Utah for
smelting.
Geiger Counter Being
Explained To Residents
Camden, N. J. (U.R) New
Jersey is setting up a training
program to teach Individuals the
use of the Geiger counter, In case
of a super-bomb attack.
C. George Krueger, deputy
commissioner of labor, disclosed
the plan at a meeting of safety
engineers and representatives of
south Jersey industry. He said
the department of labor engi
neers now are setting up the
program.
Training will include the han
dling of the Geiger counter and
checking of areas for radioactive
hazards. Schools for Industrial
representatives will be set up
throughout the state.
