leases from the ABC network,
Frank Sinatra began his singing
career with a unit of the "Origi
nal Amateur Hour" under the
aegis of the late Major Bowes
with a singing group known as
"The Hoboken Four." As the
story goes, it was during the
unit's stand in Portland, Ore.,
that Frankie summoned up his
courage, and suggested to the
manager of the theater in Port
land that he be permitted to
sing solo.
"Y o u, s o 1 o?" the manager
chortled. Thats the funniest
thing I've ever heard. Now, beat
it fast and join your Hoboken
Four before I decide not to let
you sing at all."

The detectives went to a resi
dence on a prowler alarm.
It developed that the neigh
bors and the owner of a tomcat
were arguing only about the
sleep-disturbing vocal antics of
the cat.
The cops handed in the milk,
booted the cat and went back to
the station.

Ringworm Is a disease of the
skin caused by several varieties
of fungi. A fungus is a micro
scopic vegeta
ble organism or
body, of a very
low order of
life, an exam
ple of which is
a mold such
as that very
commonly seen
in dis c a r d e d
food.
Many fungi
may be eaten
in quantity
without harm
to the body
such as mold in
cheese and other foods. In fact,
many fungi are actually the
source of essential food princi
ples. Yeasts are fungi and are
the source of a rich supply of
vitamin B.
Generally speaking, most fungi
are very slightly menacing to
man. They may cause disease of
the superficial layers of the skin,
and also of the hair and nails.
These are the disorders named
"ringworm."
Some fungi are more menacing
to man. The "ray fungus" which
causes a disease in cattle known
as "lumpy jaw," causes a similar
disease in the human. Other
serious diseases of man may be
caused by certain types of fungi.
The disease depends upon the
specific kind of fungus con
cerned. It should be understood
that common yeasts and molds
do not cause serious disease in
man, although they may give
rise to persistent and trouble
some minor diseases of the skin.
Ringworm may attack the skin
of the body in various locations.
Ringworm is usually given a sec
ondary name depending upon the
location of the disease. Thus
"athlete's foot" is ringworm of
the toes and feet. "Barber's itch"
is ringworm of the bearded re
gion of the face. "Jockey-strap
itch" is ringworm of the inside of
the thighs and crotch.
Ringworm of the scalp results
in breaking off of the hairs in
patches which present a "stub
bly" appearance. I have not
heard of any other lay term for
this disorder
Ringworm appearing on non
hairy areas of the body is char
acterized by circular, reddened
areas of small diameter, which
gave rise to the name, under the
supposition that a "worm" gained
access to the skin and bored
around in circles.
Ringworm is a contagious dis
ease affecting both man and
animals. While man may acquire
ringworm from handling ani
mals, different types of fungi
exhibit a marked preference for
one or the other to the extent
that transference of the disease
from animals to man is purely
incidental.
Children are particularly sus
ceptible to ringworm of the scalp
and body but rarely develop
"athlete's foot." Adults often

The reson for this is not clearly
understood.
Ringworm of the scalp has
reached epidemic proportions.
The disease is readily transmit
ted from child to child both di
rectly and indirectly. Perhaps
the most important means of In
direct Infection involves the back
of chairs against which children
rest their heads. The chairs in
moving picture theaters, de
signed primarily for the comfort
of adults, are particularly in
point.
Ringworm of the feet may also
be acquired indirectly, as by
using contaminated shower stalls
and the approaches thereto. Ef
forts to prevent spread of infec
tion by the use of medicated foot
baths have been found to be un
successful. Treatmeqt of ringworm will be
the subject of a subsequent
article.

valves Is one cause. Circulatory ob
atructton is another cause. The heart

Heart block is a condition in which
the lower chambers of the heart con
tract independently of the contrac
tion of the upper chambers, thus
producing circulatory confusion with,
in the heart. It is caused by disease
of the mechanism contained within
the heart which governs the synchro
nization of nervouse control. I fear
