longed drouth became a life and death struggle for a herd of hippos
when the lake's 12 feet of water gradually evaporated. In quest ot
leaves and dry grass, this hippo ventured to the dry shores miles
away, and on the way back to the muddy uoze collapsed in the sear
ing heat. Along a 50-mlle stretch of shore, 50 dead beasts were count
ed without searching. After two years, the rains finally came.
